Harvard study finds e-cigarettes can still give you lung disease

E-cigarettes, or vaping, has surpassed traditional cigarette use says the Centers for Disease Control, but a new research find that despite manufacturers’ claims, they’re not necessarily a safer alternative.

A study published by a team at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that most flavored e-cigarette and refill liquids contain harmful chemicals that can cause a respiratory disease which scars the lung and makes breathing difficult. The team tested 51 types of flavored e-cigarettes and liquids by leading brands and found that 47 contained diacetyl, acetoin, or 2,3-pentanedione.

The UK government reckons they’re 95% safer than cigarettes. I assume the harvard study is concentrating on the ‘5%’

Maybe. Who knows.

Interesting - thanks.

Yes - if you have to have your nicotine fix - its probably significantly better than cigarettes I guess.

The report says:

An expert independent evidence review published today by Public Health England (PHE) concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking.

Key findings of the review include:

  1. the current best estimate is that e-cigarettes are around 95% less harmful than smoking
  2. nearly half the population (44.8%) don’t realise e-cigarettes are much less harmful than smoking
  3. there is no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers

The url is “I can’t go out cough i’m sick” o.o

Well, phooey. You’re making that ePipe I’ve been eyeing less attractive. Stop it, would you?

Hmph.

Pixel.

I recently started vaping a e-cigarette. I have gotten positive results from switching to e-cigarettes. My breathing, taste of smell and blood circulation seem to be doing much better. Also, e-cigs cost a lot less.

I am planning on reducing the nicotine content on the e-cigs gradually and quit it slowly.

well, I did the vape thing just over one day and I found it makes me cough too much. I’m stopping smoking tomorrow cold turkey again. The one thing I didn’t like about the vapes is that the cost didn’t justify the means. That and I didn’t want nicotine in my blood anymore.

I’ll smoke whatever kills me fastest…

No shocker to me. My thoughts is its just a nice work around to get around the no smoking inside laws that the cigarette companies have to deal with

Stopped smoking using organic oil without the mentioned additives and without nicotine. Used a 14mg patch and it worked. Why care what Harvard says ? Lol! The study is too small to be the final word on the issue.

Does Hahvahd have any better ideas than the Vape? I doubt it.
