Happiness and antidepressants

Honestly I think happiness I subjective. The richest person in the world may be miserable and depressed and would give all the money in the world to be happy. Money and fame don’t buy happiness. The poorest person may be happy and content with life provided they have the right balance of serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitters in their brains. Personally I think my schizophrenia and depression became evident when I entered puberty around 13 and I spiralled into the abyss until I was officially diagnosed at 25. With the help of God, my anti psychotics and especially my antidepressants I’m extremely happy, Almost Euphoric. I really believe every schizophrenic has some degree of depression and would benefit from antidepressants. I’m just writing this so others that are on anti psychotics only could try talking with their doctors to put them on antidepressants also. I just want everyone with this illness to get better cause I know how dark n hopeless it can get. It won’t be a perfect life but certainly it will be better.I wish you all good health n a great life.

I’m sorry you are still paranoid it ge better honstly. A doctor once told me that but I didn’t believe him. You just have to find the right drugs and dose. It won’t be perfect but definitely better. I was in abilify fir about a year but u didn’t respond to ur and it was bloody expensive so my doctor changed it. I’m currently on risperidone and fluoxetine. I hope you get better soon. I wish u well

The opposite of depression is not happiness; the opposite of depression is vitality.

Well one could also argue that the opposite is mania. I’m not saying depression is exactly the opposite of happiness. I just mean that antidepressants can go a long way to making one feel happier

I have sz but absolutely do not have depression. Taking antidepressants because I have sz would be dumb and over medicate me.

Antidepressants just numb me from depression

I take lithium with lamictal. Controls highs and lows but in winter I take wellbutrin because of seasonal affective disorder. SAD is a major depressive state brought on usually by late fall and winter usually in the northern states and Canada

You are happy when you are doing what you want to do … not just seeking more money.

I stand corrected. I should have said most people with schizophrenia could benefit from antidepressants. Mea culpa

theres a lot of evidence that the brain adapts to compensate for the effects of ssri’s and aps tending towards maintaining homeostasis. in aps the brain increases dopamine receptors on the postsynaptic neuron by as much as one hundred percent because most of these receptors are gummed up and blocked by the antipsychotic. this can have deleterious effects in the long term such as causing tardive psychosis as a result of dopamine supersensitivity. psychosis which was immediately mild or short lived can become chronic as a result of the introduction of these types of drugs to your system.

ssris also create abnormalities in the brain which cause it to change in adjustment. with more serotonin in the synaptic cleft the brain keys down the sensitivity of its receptors. i dont know much about this so i will leave it at that.

just know that these changes most certainly occur in the majority of psychiatric drug takers and that they may be irreversible over time. there is little long term data on the effectiveness of psych drugs, most studies last only six weeks or less.

while psych drugs may be beneficial to you over the short term, that high may wear off after a time and they may alter your brain chemistry permanently in a way that reduces or increases vulnerability to psychosis and other normal capacities of emotion and cognition

I value your opinion and definitely think that some people benefit from meds for their schizophrenia. But everyone is different and typically if you take antidepressants you have more needs to be met than an antipsychotic can handle. But everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another. There are just always different methods to try.

When I was in jail in Jackson, TN this black guy started talking about how good he felt. I didn’t think much about it at the time, but later I realized that it was probably due to a small dose of Prozac they were giving him. I wish I had thought to tell him that.

Yes you are right. People are react to drugs differently and I know people with schizoaffective-disorder the bipolar type need mood stabilizer not antidepressants
