Got robbed today

Well,

That solves at least part of the problem.

Next step, deadbolt.

Then gruesome, bloody revenge?

No, probably start replacing stuff so the next robbers will have something to steal.

Just kidding! I’m joking because this situation is horrible.

I hope you get some sleep despite everything, but I know you probably won’t.

You’ll get things taken care of, one by one.

The door frame is a great start.

Yeah, the lock they busted through was a deadbolt, so having one of those doesn’t give me much comfort anymore.

A big part of it is having the frame fit back properly.

Also, I found an article about deadbolts.

Which ones are best and how to install them for maximum effectiveness.

That’s really scarey @freakonaleash. I’m glad you and your pets are OK.

The door placement is critical. If it’s not between two studs then the only thing holding the deadbolt is drywall. And you can break that with your hands…

The door is appropriately placed; there is wood there, not drywall, but they busted it through the wood, used some force.

@freakonaleash man, I am so sorry for you !! Intrusions can scar a mentally ill person…I hope you can sleep tonight.

Yeah, I’m getting tired, but not sure about going to sleep just yet. If I pass out, I pass out, but I’m not sure I will willingly go to sleep tonight.

Jab pins

#12 3" full thread screws
(Home depot or local hardware store)

Long throw deadbolt

High security deadbolt strike plate

About $60, the door would fail before the rest for mostly all low tech door attacks

Maybe they had a prybar or crowbar. Can’t be certain though. Deadbolts can’t be kicked in by normal people.

Maybe, hadn’t thought of that.

As far as the lock goes, I’m pretty much stuck with what the maintenance man installs, as they want it keyed to his master key.

Do you live in an industrial area or a place where there might be trade businesses?

I’m not sure what you mean. I live in what is very much a residential area.

****** **** with a 4x6 as a spacer opens almost everything… nearly nothing can prevent it but only low tech pros use it. Most break in are tool less. Walking down the street with a screw driver or a brick and a tv in your hands are considered tools of breaking an entry, the TV alone means your probably moving on the cheap.

So there wouldn’t be any places you know of that keep tools.

They can have it keyed anyways they want, it’s all about the long throw bolt, strike plate and long #12 screws, the short throw bolts can be pryed open with a crowbar, the strike plate and screws prevent kick ins

No, no place that I know of around here.

I’d keep my blinds closed from now on.

With most installs they use the hardware that comes with the parts. #8 1" screws hold back a rabid cat. Prybar are pretty quiet vs crashing/kicking a door in. Getting only what they could carry says from start of entry to exit was 30 seconds to a minute.
