Girl, Interrupted Movie

For those of you who have seen this movie, did you in anyway relate the first half of the movie Suzanna to schizophrenia instead of borderline personality disorder? I don’t really know how similar they are, but a lot of what the main girl experienced seemed really similar to me. And of course, I also related to Angelina Jolie’s character, especially when I am manic or having that flat affect. I remember reading the book a long time ago and enjoyed it. The movie is very good. I don’t really think it got the point across that hospitals aren’t fun though. Well, at least not short term ones…

I’ve never read the book, only saw the movie. Couldn’t relate to any of the movie at all. Seemed pretty much like a lot of drama over a single incident.

Yeah thats what I thought. The book is really good too. But the main char in the movie clearly has delusions and a distortion of time. This is illustrated in the book as well, which is a memoir of the real Suzanna. It was overdramatized and unrealistic, like them sneaking around the hospital or downright escaping, but I think it showed a good variety of different illnesses.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen that movie, I’d have to watch it again and see.

Same here… it’s been a very long times since I’ve seen it… hardly remember it.

I read the book + thought eh -it’s not that great. It was written sort of sketchy. But some of it turns up in my mind now + then + I begin to think by the way it was written it is better than I originally thought.

Seen the movie…and gone to that hospital (Mclean) on an outpatient basis to score meds…an ex girlfriend of mine spent some time inpatient there and said it was an awful experience.

Huh…maybe it wasn’t based on Mclean…could have sworn it was. (Oh the book was)

I read the book my freshman year of college after my first SI/SU incident. I related to the book and didn’t feel so alone. The movie was eh.

All I remember is thinking that I thought the movie portrayed mentally ill as kind of “wild and mean” when that one girl that slept with her father killed herself and the rest of the girls were kind of callous about it.?

Borderline Personalty Disorder is a serious mental illness, some say that it really isnt a personality disorder - its kind of like bipolar and can involve some transient psychotic symptoms - paranoia, hallucinations, delusions under stress - it passes rather quickly as it is transient. Borderlines sometimes self harm, get involved with splitting, and see the world in very black and white terms - little grey. Borderlines have a difficult time regulating and controlling their emotions. DBT and certain medications can help - my ex wife suffered from Borderline, she struggled
