Which I find disturbing. Whilst I have personal reasons for being critical of psychiatry, and believe in the need for moderate change, I could never be antipsychiatry/pro its destruction.
In light of an influx of what can only be called antipsychiatry orientated posts, and the support for such posts from certain quarters, I am seriously questioning whether people here still want the kind of thing I offer in terms of articles or whether the antipsychiatry message is now preferred.
No I donāt like the anti-psychiatry element. Since you asked, I Have a really hard time reading anything at all + find most of the articles you post beyond me. I wonder if there is a middle ground - less technical articles or better a synopsis by you or someone has read them. Or the ideas in the article that might affect me or anyone here. The more words the more often I give up.
It may be increasing but I donāt think the MAJORITY. of people here are fully anti-psychiatry. Why not post a poll asking who considers themselves anti-psychiatry?
I personally think this is the wrong place for it, and its a bunch of garbage. I think they should be flagged and gone.
I agree right on the edge of scientology also. Some interesting reading when you google some of the so called experts names and that group. Unfortunately not enough proof that they are one to argue the point on the posts.
I like your articles saves me alot of searching
I think I am having a crisis of confidence. I am not a psychiatry all good or psychiatry all bad type of person.
My own experience has not been ideal and yet I am acutely aware that for some psychiatry and the use of medication has been a life saver.
What I see in antipsychiatry is a desire to demolish rather than to rebuild or restructure with something better
do you mean anti psychiatry as in just anti psych drug? or do you mean the site is becoming too pro alternative? i think it is good to see both sides
I donāt believe it should be abolished, but I do believe the field is in definite need of reform.
Maybe further definition of antipsychiatry?
Iām not sure that looking at other treatment options along with medications or even instead of when medications donāt work would be considered antipsychiatryā¦
What is your definition of antipsychiatry?
I would say it is antipsychiatry when it seeks to paint psychiatry in a uniformly bad light without acknowledging anything positive about it. Negative research is highlighted and cherry picked for dissemination whilst more positive research is brushed under the carpet and not disseminated.
I am very much pro-psychiatry in principle. Medicine generally produces quick and dirty fixes, but not complete cures, but itās the best weāve got for now. I think some shrinks are probably not a good match with some patients and some meds too. But that means you need to find a better doc or med for you. I think the anti-psych crew are idealists. They think life on earth can be perfect. One day most of them realize that life and people can only be āgood enoughā and āgood enoughā is good enough!
You said it all. I am not anti psychiatry - I do however feel that a major overhaul on the diagnostic - medication treatments are needed. I have been a āconsumerā of the psychiatric system since I was a child. I have been on different meds since I was a kid - I think that if you are lucky enough to find a good psychiatrist, consider yourself lucky.
Changes are needed - the entire DSM system is a failure - and a lot of psychiatrists know this
There is fungus among us
iām not anti psychiatry at all as i think meds have helped a lot of people, just not me is all. i seem to have episodes regardless of which med iām on whether at a high or low dose. thankfully i havenāt had a full blown psychotic episode for about 5 years now and been on 3 different meds in that time both high and low doses. iām still trying out different meds. now the voices may never stop regardless of which med iām on but iām willing to try them allā¦even the dreaded clozapine as a last resort. once iāve done that, iāll decide based upon my reaction to them whether i need to be on meds at all or can just ride out the episodes on my own with family support. i think for some psychiatry has been a godsendā¦but i think diagnosing someone without physical evidence is dangerous and wrong. itās just unfortunate there is no physical evidence right now to back up diagnoses. right now a psychiatrist should sayā¦you may be schiz/bipolar/nosā¦but i canāt tell you because there is no physical way of knowing in the current diagnostic climate because of the lack of neurological evidence but here are some medications that you should try out as they seem to help a percentage of people. thatās what they should be telling people.
also i for one love your posts about the latest research. it gives many people hope for a future cure and that canāt be a bad thing firemonkey x
I wouldnāt worry about it. Your articles are fine.
It seems there are some outside instigators - thatās what I donāt like.
there will always be those that differ from pro psychiatry. I am pro psychiatry.
I donāt think people should be qualified as pro or anti-psychiatry. Itās just a matter of what works best for someone. Itās not a political issue anymore, itās an issue of resources and dependancy. A lot of people want full independent lifestyles and the best for themselves while treating this terrible illness. Being in touch and up to date is not a bad thing, it just means that you are aware of your health and are trying to treat an illness. Iāve been proactive in treating this illness for awhile now, and it has helped a lot. There is always going to be people who are critical, but thereās nothing wrong with that. Weāre not Nazi scientists, weāre just people who are trying to do whatās right and best for ourselves amidst a growing and changing world. Often people who fall through the cracks get these illnesses, and there are many types of psychosis. There is drug induced psychosis, there is PTSD psychosis, there is chronic depression and gene mutations that cause symptoms which are the chronic illness of schizophrenia but also treatable and preventable.
Itās great that people can come together and discuss what works and doesnāt no matter whether youāre progressive and believe in change, or conservative because some things need to remain the same.
