Genes for Good results came in!

I posted on here a while back about a free research study called genes for good that provides genotyping for you. My results came in yesterday and I had them interpreted and learned a lot of interesting things about myself! Most of my genes related to physical health were very good, I had a lot of polymorphisms that were protective. However I did find out I’m at risk to potentially develop arthritis, ulcers and something known as “chronic widespread pain” which is a less severe version of fibromyalgia. (Honestly I’m in pain all the time anyways so I wouldn’t be surprised if I had that now)

For mental health my genotype was a mess, I had a ton of bad polymorphisms, a lot associated with schizophrenia, some with depression, anxiety, even some for ADHD! (I’ve always had attention issues but I figured it was because of my mental health issues. Wonder if I should look into finding out if I have some type of ADHD?) I confirmed that I have high levels of dopamine in my brain, I had a lot of mutations that make dopamine reuptake not work as well. Also I have a polymorphism that suggests that I am more likely to experience enhanced side effects from antipsychotics! So that explains a lot.

Then there was a lot of other interesting things I learned like how I’m more sensitive to pain, genetically inherited painful period cramps, I have protective factors against obesity and genes that create a slim body shape, I’m less likely to age a lot in my face, caffeine doesn’t have as much of an effect on me as other people, and more.

I think the study is still going so I definitely recommend anyone who wants free genotyping to sign up, and then get your raw genetic data interpreted by a service like LiveWello.

Don’t be a pure reductionist which attributes everything to genes, genes have effects but by learning to live Healthy many things can be changed if not any, glad to hear you have good genes but I don’t accept you can not beat bad ones.:yellow_heart::green_heart::purple_heart:

Oh yeah definitely I know nothing is written in stone when it comes to genes! Still interesting to see the coding I’m made up of though!

Hey, that app is neat! I just started doing it, going to see if I can get that spit kit sent to me! Also, it’s for science, so I’m all on board for that

Just paranoid about new privatized insurance companies or employers getting a hold of my dna…but it’s for the GOOD OF SCIENCE!
GO SCIENCE!

Just did the memory test and I have got to say my memory is terrible. I thought it was just a little bad before but that test said that like I did better than 15% of people. I feel stupid. Going to try the other ones but still a little demoralizing.

I was very surprised by the memory test. I’ve always considered myself to have a terrible memory as well. But somehow I scored in the 98th or 99th percentile for working memory, and was average in everything else. Weird!

Just took the brain switch one and I don’t think I did that well. The higher the number the worse it is I think.

Got the gene results back for genes for good. All that they told me was that I was half east asian and half caucasian. Nothing that I didn’t already know. There are tiny bits of north african and southeast asian in there but not much. They didn’t go over genetic defects that I might have. I was hoping they would so I would know what to expect.

Nah, you have to do that yourself. Download your raw genetic data and then use a site like LiveWello to interpret it, then you can see what defects you have

I just got a new pair of JCrew jeans in the mail.
Cost me 90 bucks. No side effects
