Gardening outside

Is gardening a past time of yours? I’ve ordered some Fenugreek seeds and plan on giving it a try. They are a nutritious plant.

When I was a kid, I helped my grandfather with his garden, weeding and tilling and harvesting. I even had a small garden of my own, though the only thing I ever grew myself was lettuce.

Yes, i do…not too much this year but most years i do. this year I have the wild Heal-all I transplanted to my garden in 2013…some squash, cucumbers, Basil and Chard… I’ll do more next year… I’ve recently added a ton of topsoil and potting soil in my old garden and will manure it this fall or early next spring, along with the compost we are making… everything is organic…

I have a few little trees in pots in front of my [porch. Today I bought a couple of wild-like flowers. I’m going to try growing them indoors.

I used to have an outdoor wildflower garden. It had lots of rock walls. Mulch + kill the weeds and all that. I learned the names of a lot of wildflowers that way.

I grew baby spinach, lettuce. Expensive at store if I have land.

I garden as a job… but I do love it. I like spending time in the gardens. It’s the best way to calm down.

I love working in the community gardens and the rose gardens.

not really, and its sort of a good thing since I live in an apartment building.

Gardening often frustrates me. Once I grew Chinese cabbage in my back yard, and I watered them everyday. But soon later most of them died of no reason. I only harvested two which were very thin. So I can only grow shallots. What a shame!

Chinese cabbage can get root rot if overwatered, and also there is a worm that attacks the root part and gets inside…perhaps that happened. I have had worm problems before in some plants.
Another possibility is lack of certain minerals in the soil. A lot of soil is depleted, especially of calcium…
I have a problem with certain squashes…while summer squash and zucchini grow well, I have never been able to get acorn, butternut or hubbard squash to even start a fruit…Occasionally I can get a pumpkin but most often those just grow vines and flowers without fruits too.

Plants dont die for no reason…there is a reason, just have to find it… could be anything from poor light to poor soil to too much water, to too little water, to unseen insects… I also know plants like tomatoes will do poorly in soil where there are Black Walnut roots…got that one figured out a few years ago, but had to do some research…

This is a Zucchini I grew in 2011…they do good here

My favorite is lemon squash.

There is a very tiny lemony taste to it. It’s not a fussy plant.

Pumpkins I find take a lot of water and need a lot of sun in the beginning to make it.

@e_lunaseer- Are you talking the full sized pumpkins or the little sugar pumpkins. I’ve had better luck with the smaller ones.

I’ve tried both… I did get some of the small ones one year… the larger ones won’t produce. I have the problem of not enough water since my water supply is cistern so is limited.
It got so dry recently and no rain in forecast that I did a rain calling and drumming…and it rained…yay

Wow, such a big zucchini. This is really impressive. Thank you for you explanation for my Chinese cabbage. Gardening really requires knowledge, doesn’t it?

It really does require knowledge…some places more than others. I’ve had gardens that just seem to grow on their own with a little watering and weeding… Others are stubborn…with all sort of insect problems, wilt, rot, fungi… or fruits that start growing then wither when they are like 2" long…

That is when I start looking at a soil problem. I hate those spots… you have till and add nutrients every year, and mulch and it’s just fussy.

If that’s the land you got then you have to make due… but sometimes I give up and just plant my garden somewhere else. Or turn it into a raised bed…

My grandfather used to grow Zucchini. He’d make Zucchini bread out of it and it was awesome. Good fried with flour too. Mmmm, good stuff.

Oh yeah… I have not had fried Zucchini in a long time. My gran used to make it and used to make it look so easy to whip up. Thank you for reminding me. Another favorite one is lightly breaded eggplant.

I had to ammend the soil greatly since its a lot of rock and clay with only less than an inch of topsoil…My beds are slightly raised and dug down about a foot or more below ground level… all the soil is good soil, a combination of organic topsoils, potting soils, humus & manure plus my own compost from leaves, grass clippings and kitchen refuse…

I actually have a pic of some of the beds this year…

that is a beautiful zuchinni, ours come out swole and my paps tells me the big ones are no good. I cook them anyway and they taste good to me. Zuchinni has cognitive benefits for sure.

I got my fenugreek seeds! 2$ for 300 seeds! I’m going to sprout them. Fenugreek is culinary in some countries and it will make you feel like popeye on spinach.

The big ones may be tougher and you have to peel the skin but the meat is fine. If you want the best though with the skin soft and eadible, use ones that are 6 - 10 inches long… like these…

Like anything else…smaller is usually more tender and succulent …
