Gabapentin for anxiety? Anyone?

I started a month ago, 100mg 2x daily. It was insufficient, so pdoc increased it to 300mg 3x daily, starting today. I feel…different. When am I supposed to know if it’s working? Is this a drug that takes a while to kick in?

I’d like to hear about anyone else’s experiences with this drug, for anxiety, or any reason. How much did you take? How long? How did you feel? Did you notice an improvement in anything?

It worked for me. I don’t remember the dosage. Now, I just take magnesium taurate for anxiety.

I tried magnesium. Unfortunately, it didn’t help much. I’m glad it’s working for you though!

Gabapentin is a lot of fun for me. I can’t take it too often, because it makes me manic and hypersexual. But it definitely takes the edge off my anxiety. I built up a tolerance really quickly when I was taking it regularly. Now, I only take it PRN for panic attacks, and it works much better for me.

I take 100mg. of gabapentin at lunchtime and 200mg. at bedtime … for nerve pain.

How would it work @Ninjastar to take it prn for anxiety? Just take one when I knew I was going to be in an anxiety provoking situation?

I wouldn’t recommend changing up your dose without consulting your doctor. It works well for me, but I don’t take it regularly.

I took 1000mg every night for sciatica for over a year. but I still used my Ativan prn for anxiety, I didn’t know it could be used for anxiety, I must of slept through the benefits.

Well it’s not as strong as Ativan. If you were using that, you probably wouldn’t have noticed any effect from the gabapentin. But it’s less addictive, which is why I take it. I ran into some trouble with prescription painkillers a few years back, and ever since then I refuse to take any controlled substances.

I am so proud of you for making that decision for your life. Those meds are dangerous. I have to be very careful with mine or I’ll just use them all up. I have to make 20 last a month so I’m pretty picky what I use them for. Right now I have 10 left and only a few days left in the month so that tells me either it’s been a good month or I haven’t left the house very much. lol

edit: I take 2mg because I’ve been at it so long

It was scary. I was only 17 at the time, and my doctor kept me on painkillers for almost 5 months because of my brain surgery. It was necessary, because I had just had my skull sliced open, but it was very challenging to come off them after so long. Luckily, my brother knew every drug dealer in town, and threatened to smash their kneecaps if they sold to me. So I didn’t wind up with a permanent drug problem. I just had to deal with withdrawal, and then I was okay.

It’s a strong person to overcome something like that. I had an issue with benzodiazepines and now I refuse to take them.

I guess I’m on a low dose, but it doesn’t make me tired at all.

I think they do really high doses for sciatica for people who can’t take pain killers
