At the secondhand shop I work someone delivered a adult movie today :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

A while ago someone came in with a used toilet brush :poop:

I have always wondered: what do secondhand shops do when they get things like this?

I think they have a special portal with an iron cast gate with a lock that only certain people can go into.

Then they open the lock and drop the used underwear and toilet brushes into the portal, which in turn drops the junk into a blackhole in space.

YW.

:relieved:

At least that sounds environmentally friendly. Space and all.

Haha!

You know what Jello Biafra once said:

“Falling space junk, hold the anchovies.”

I used to work at Goodwill in 2020/into 2021. We had a LOT of huge dumpsters and used them frequently. We needed a hydraulic lift to get to them.

Unsaleable clothes, shoes, purses, etc gets sold to a recycler by the pound.

Some of the odd items I rang up as cashier - packages of adult diapers and feminine hygiene products, naked dolls, CBD lotion, vinyl record albums that i always wondered if they could actually still play. Artwork that was done by someone as a hobby…why would they donate that?

People would get hostile sometimes over who saw a furniture item first too. I hated calling managers in to settle the frequent disputes.

You’d be surprised at how many people get obnoxiously petty over prices that are already low, and how much theft there is.

One more thing - I got yelled at constantly for having low roundup numbers. You know how they ask if you want to round up your total? Yeah, all the money goes to Goodwill. Their way of getting even more money out of people buying inventory they got for free. Nope. Not gonna ask unless a manager is in earshot. I’m not a professional panhandler.

Some people are so gross lol I hate when people abuse donation bins to get rid of their old crap. I see people putting half cans of paint, old tires etc and I’m like wth lol the charity has to pay to dispose of that stuff so it’s like stealing from charity basically

Lol that’s funny. Hope it wasn’t too hard on ya. It’s better than value village though. They only give 10% to Charity I’ve heard!

That’s crazy about all the stuff you used to ring up.

And I have heard some shady stuff about Goodwill.

I mostly shop at a neighborhood thrift store that’s owned by Catholic Charities, so I’m fairly certain that the profits go back into the community and helping people out.

Don’t even get me started on the mess people make every night dumping piles of unaccepted items like mattresses, baby cribs, and car seats.

That’s really a joy when it’s been raining all night. Was always glad at those times I was a cashier, not a donated goods processor. Or a hanger who processed tons of nasty unwashed and stained clothing.

Every time i rang up a bra sale, I wondered who in the world would buy a pre-owned bra when Walmart was a mile away?? Yuck!

And they’re true.

I tried working there as a last ditch attempt to get off disability. Goodwill advertises about how great they are getting people released from prison and disabled people into the workforce. Yeah, and then they treat us like disposable garbage…then they wonder why their turnover rate sucks!

Oh yeah, I think they’re good.

I used to volunteer at the Catholic Charities soup kitchen when I lived in Calgary. Loved it.

Very cool!

I’ve volunteered a couple times at their thrift shop in my neighborhood.

It was pretty cool. Pretty much all the managers were nice to me.

I mostly just hung up clothes and helped organize the store.

Oh yeah, that’s another thing about Goodwill. You’re constantly doing recovery on the sales floor because people throw merchandise all over the place.

Dressing rooms were closed during the pandemic, but once they opened those up?? I’m OUTTA there!:rofl:
