For those who have had a hysterectomy, I have some questions

So, I am thinking about a total hysterectomy (removal of top of uterus, bottom of uterus [AKA cervix] and ovaries)(my fallopian tubes were already removed).

I have horrible menstrual periods. They last for weeks. And I also lose my mind in the 2 weeks before (and the first 1 or 2 days of), almost ending up in the hospital, every time. If I get a hysterectomy, I would need the ovaries gone, so that the hormones don’t make me lose my mind.

So, for those of you who have had a hysterectomy:

  1. What exactly did you have removed?
  2. How do you feel now, post-hysterectomy? Any bad, lasting effects of having organs removed?
  3. Do you need hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

Thank you, to anyone who responds. :relaxed:

I had a total hysterectomy a couple of years ago, ovaries, uterus, and cervix removed. I had heavy periods and almost psychotic PMS. I used hormones the first couple of months after but no longer use them. The hysterectomy made my life so much better! I no longer had crazy emotional swings from my cycle and I absolutely loved not having to deal with the whole period mess. I haven’t experienced any negatives from not doing hormone replacement therapy, no hot flashes, etc. It made my life so much better!

I had one about ten years ago, I suffered from endometriosis terrible cramping and pain, I haven’t had to go on any hormones.

I had a hysterectomy in 2010. My periods stopped because I didn’t have a uterus. I also had my cervix removed.

Then, in 2012 my ovaries had to be removed. I took estrogen for 8 years but was warned I’m at high risk of breast cancer because I took it for more than 5 years. So I’ve been off it for about 2 years now.

I’m ok but I take calcium everyday because not having enough estrogen makes bones thinner and more brittle. I also need lubricant during sex. Other than that I feel fine physically

heavy periods, pain, and cramping are usually the reason to have hysterectomy.

my mother had one, but I didn’t…

she was out of commision for days afterward.

I had one, but the Amazon delivery person left the gate open and it got away. I’m offering a reward to anyone who finds it and returns it to me.

My mom had one and needed HRT to stop bone deterioration. She had to take it until she could reasonably start menopause
