do you have a job, or have you worked while on the medication? I know we all have varying degrees of illnesses and meds affect us each in different ways, but I was wondering if those people taking risperdal do or do not work. I feel like my work ethic and strength/motivation is severely comprised due to the med. I take 4 mg FWIW
I’m on Risperdal and can’t work, but it has nothing to do with taking meds.
I no longer am able to work because my schizobipolar has worsened/progressed.
risperdal is somewhat debilitating, don’t you think? I’d like to work so that means testing the waters by getting off the med
I wouldn’t get off meds on your own.
Discuss it with your doctor before anything.
Risperdal has helped me cope with my delusional disorder, but it came with a great cost. It made me completely and utterly useless in every way, while I was in 6mg and 4mg a day. Now my dose is much lower so I can function and I could work simple works if I had to. But the higher the dose, the more brutal the side effects, obviously.
One thing that did and I haven’t been able to undone is the muscle rigidity. I used to be very fit, now I can just walk, and just trying to do a pushup is painful. But then again, that will probably change when my dose is lowered even more.
I’ve worked part time and casual on Risperdal. About 6 hours a day with a break is my limit on working. Although it’s been about 5 years since I worked last starting to get back into it. Had a few set backs and getting back on my feet just now.
I use Risperdal as needed, but I’m also incapable of holding a job. Like Wave.
Not sure about work but it makes sex inpossible
Non-employable risperdal user, but they’re switching me to clozapine nowadays.
i’ve been on risperdal three times and each time i found it impossible to work. i’m on haldol and latuda now and i still can’t work
THis is a common complaint with risperdal. Something about this med saps people of functionality/motivation. Try a more activating med perhaps like ziprasidone or latuda or aripprazole. Some meds are more motivating than others in my experience. Ziprasidone is similar to risperidone, less efficacy though. If risperidone works for you and your positive symptoms are not very prominent a switch to ziprasidone may help you. Risperidone is the antipsychotic which psychiatirists are told to put patients on first. That clozapine and olanzapine are supposed to have the best efficacy. Unfortunately all three have terrible side effects. With risperidone it elevates a hormone called prolactin which makes you depressed amotivated and sexually dysfunctional. Consider talking to a psychiatrist about trialling more atypical antipsychotics, quetiapine and ziprasidone are supposed to be good for negative symptoms like amotivation. Latuda and aripiprazole are two other options. For me the difference between olanzapine and quetiapine is the difference between night and day. On one I am a totally functional person, on the other I am a psychotic zombie basically.
Risperidone made me eat a lot and made me feel restless, but it really does keep you brain quiet if you can tolerate it.
I have been on Chlorpromazine since August, I love that one, but I need to take an antidepressant with it so I don’t feel suicidal.
It can be difficult to work with mental illness, regardless of medication.
I worked 25 hours a week when I was on Risperidone. I had a job where I didn’t have to get up early or stay up late, and that seemed to be key. I only stayed on Risperidone for about a month, though, because it made me throw up all the time.
I worked on 1-2 mgs of Risperdal. I volunteer on 3 mgs now. I’m in crisis mode, so I take an extra .5 mgs for a few days. I was on 1mg for a longer than usual time. I weigh less than most people, but I worked from jump. I then went to college for 2 semesters. I’ll be going back in the fall.
In the fall and late winter to spring I get muscle pain. I’m having problems with muscle stiffness from standing in front of the copier for most of the day. You can’t do cardio on Risperdal. On risperdal you can’t get too cold or too hot. It works for me.
I haven’t worked a paid job since 1996. I was railroaded out of that job by coworkers who didn’t like me. I have been out of a job for so many years that I am now unemployable due to no recent work history.
