For the forum’s concertgoers

  1. Which band put on the best performance you’ve ever seen?

  2. What would you say was the best concert lineup you’ve ever seen?

  3. Your all around best concert experience?

  4. I’d ask if you have any favorite concert venues, though I realize some of you do not want to give away your location.

For me:

  1. Avatar, a Swedish metal band. When I saw them last year they put on an incredible two hour set, never seen anything like it.

  2. Last August at Pine Knob, an outdoor venue near Detroit, I saw Butcher Babies, followed by nonpoint, followed by Gwar, followed by Coal Chamber, followed by Mudvayne. I love all of those bands except Gwar. Gwar put on a fun show, though.

  3. Best concert experience was last March when I sprung for a balcony upgrade. That venue had for their balcony attendees our own lounge with plush chairs, tables, our own bar and restrooms. It was a luxury concert experience.

  4. My favorite venue is called The Machine Shop, located in Flint, Michigan. It’s a small venue, holds around 350 people, some would call it a dive, but I love it there, even though the security/bouncers are total dicks lol. I also really like St Andrews Hall (where I got the balcony upgrade) and The Fillmore, both in downtown Detroit.

I realize a lot of you don’t attend concerts, but I know some do. Hope this wasn’t too long to read.

  1. Billy Idol, fo sho.

The man looked incredible and tore his shirt off.

He was just a solid performer.

  1. I remember when I was a kid metal bands toured under “The Family Values Tour”.

I went a couple times and they had great lineups every single time.

Of course, I would probably appreciate it less today,

I loved it when I was younger.

  1. My favorite concert experience was by far my experience with My Chemical Romance.

Terrible band.

Sorry.

(Many of you know this story)

But my sister loved them and I took her to see them at the Warped Tour.

It was a little too soon after her major surgery and she started fainting during the concert.

That lead singer, Gerard Way (?) stopped his whole set and asked if we were okay.

We said no,

He had the entire crowd take two steps back so we could get out (we were very close to the stage).

So, not such a great band, but very awesome experience.

  1. I really couldn’t say what my favorite venue is.

Probably somewhere from my early 20s when I lived in Texas.

Deep Ellum.

You probably need pepper spray and your largest, most intimidating friend to walk you to your car,

But the show will totally be worth almost getting shanked.

Bruce Springsteen put on the best show I’ve ever seen in 1978. Going to Led Zeppelin in 1977 at Oakland Coliseum was pretty fun. Me and my friends brought a bunch of joints and bought some acid while waiting in line and we were just tripping on the band and the people and being high in a public place where I had been with my dad to Oakland A’s games before.

That was a pretty good venue but my favorite is called The Mountain Winery up in the foothills of Saratoga, 15 miles from San Jose, CA. It’s a relatively small place which seats 2000 and I always had good tickets when I went and sat close to the stage. I saw John Denver there, Heart, Sheryl Crow and Huey Lewis and the News. It’s a nice place, isolated up in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Incidentally, the Bruce Springsteen concert was the last concert at Winterland in San Francisco before it got tore down. For you history buffs, Winterland was built in 1926 but got famous in the 1960’s when some of the people that played there were Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Black Sabbath, Van Morrison, The Who, The Band, Steppenwolf, The Allman Brothers, Jethro Tull, David Bowie and Pink Floyd, just to name a few of the older, famous bands.

I saw…

Simple Minds in their prime. The ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ tour in Ottawa.

Van Halen in their prime. The 1984 Jump tour in Montreal.

U2 in their prime. The Joshua Tree tour. Also in Montreal.

But the best live show I ever saw was at a small venue and the band was called The Posies. Man they rocked the place down!

I’m not a big U2 fan but their concert was good only because we had great seats and were close up to them.

Blondie was second

I also got to see the band Zebra up close at a small club

They were pretty good too!

I got some shitty last minute tickets to REM’s Green tour back in the day. Smallish venue and tickets were kinda won off a radio stations show so were half priced.

Knew some of the songs for sure but the show was amazing. At the end the band did a version of the Velvet Undergrounds song After Hours and one by one the band left whilst Stipe entertained the audience. It was amazing and I’ve seen a heck of a lot of good shows over the years. This was a standout.

I saw them probably 6-10 years later after they broke and at a stadium show and they were apologising for playing their earlier songs. I’m glad I saw that show with last minute tickets!
