Fish oil & hypomania

I used fish oil in high doses since recently. At first I was really enthousiastic. I suddenly wasn’t depressed anymore and didn’t have weird fears and got all sorts of things done. But the last days I started to notice that I was getting more and more hyper, with racing thoughts and all sorts of big plans, being more talkative than normally and feeling really confident (normally I have a rather low self-esteem) and being unable to sleep. It felt a bit like being on Sertraline (antidepressive med) again, at which time my psych thought I was bipolar. At that time, the “hypomania” stopped directly upon quitting Sertraline.

I decreased the dose a lot and now I’m starting to be more relaxed again (and a little more depressed).

So, my question: can fish oil in high doses (e.g. 2000-3000mg of EPA and 1200-1800mg of DHA) cause hypomania?

This is from 2002 so no doubt there is more up to date info out there.

Anecdotal reports of a possible correlation between high doses of omega-3 fatty acids and hypomania or mania have been reported (Stoll et al., 2000; Su et al., 2000). Stoll et al. (2000) reported fewer than 10 cases of apparent omega-3-induced hypomania or mania in a series of more than 300 patients treated with various open-label preparations of flaxseed oil or fish oil. Almost all cases of apparent hypomania induction were associated with flaxseed oil. This effect was first noticed more than 20 years ago (Rudin, 1981) and was also associated with high doses of flaxseed oil, but not fish oil products. This effect is still under investigation.
