First meeting with a dietician

Well I had my first appointment with my new dietician. I really liked her! We went in depth into my weight history and my eating disorder history. We set some obtainable goals like taking pictures of the food I am eating and uploading them to the portal in their tracker. We also discussed me getting a blind scale which is a super cool invention. A blind scale connects to the internet and you step on it and it doesn’t tell you your weight but instead uploads the weight directly to your provider’s portal. I am really considering getting one because the number on the scale is so triggering to me. Sadly though I found out my insurance pays for a maximum of 10 visits per year, so if we meet weekly I’m only gonna get to see her for 2 1/2 months which doesn’t feel like enough time. They said it doesn’t matter even if I have a medically necessity referral they still only cover 10 visits. So I might see if I could be seen every other week to extend out my nutrition counseling. Its hard though because the dietician said I am more of an advanced case for outpatient care and would benefit from twice weekly visits.

I’m glad you like her. I think the blind scale is a great idea! I feel so bad for you that you get no more benefits after 10 visits. That sucks! I’d talk to her about a plan at your next appointment

Thank you! My insurance said they cover up to 26 visits a year for obesity diet counseling. I am considered obese but that’s not my main reason for being seen so I don’t know if they can bill it any differently. Just regular diet counseling they only cover 10 sessions per year.

I worked with a nutritionist under diabetes coverage with my insurance. We talked about weight loss like I needed but also diabetes so it would get covered.

Now I’m getting coverage for having IBS and luckily that’s covered too.

Bummer is, my insurance won’t cover any nutritionist appointments starting January 1st

Oh that is a bummer @LilyoftheValley that they aren’t gonna cover it in the new year. I’m not sure if the year resets on January 1st for mine because I am allowed 10 sessions per 12 months, but if it resets January 1st for me I’d be able to continue with the dietician in the new year.

It’s worth calling your insurance and asking

Yes I already called them today, once in a day is enough, I will call them tomorrow or Thursday to find out. At least my therapy sessions aren’t limited

I am so glad you had a great first appointment with your dietitian! The suggestion of taking pics of your food is an excellent idea. That will hold you accountable for what you are eating and will make it less cumbersome than if you had to write it all down. And the blind scale is another excellent idea. This dietician sounds really good!

She was really nice. It was mostly intake questions and back ground information but we were able to set those goals.
