My doctor wants to switch one of my antipsychotics over to risperidone, because I’m still suffering from residual symptoms and she hopes this will help. I was wondering about your experiences with this medication. I’m apprehensive to make any switches as an outpatient as it is because my psychosis gets really bad, but I feel unsure about this medication. I’ve read online already that people have complained about a lot of weight gain, for one, and I would really like to avoid gaining any more weight. Any input would be appreciated.
Risperidone has been very good for me. It usually takes away all my delusions in a few days. Currently, I take 2 mg risperidone at night.
However, I have gained some weight on it in the last few months. My waist size has increased from 32 to 34. Risperidone is also responsible for causing zero libido, I think. Apart from these two problems, I have no complaints.
Been on risperdal consta 25mgs since 2009.
Paranoia-moderate effect. Still there but less likely to go off the deep end because of it.
Weird thoughts/delusions?- strong effect.
Intrusive thoughts/pseudohallucinations - between moderate and strong effect. Very occasional breakthrough symptoms.
Emotional reactivity- Mixed effect. Less reactive but maybe too much in the other direction.
Negative type symptoms- minimum effect on drive, motivation and goal directed behaviour.
Side effects- some weight gain. Intermittent restlessness sub akathisia? Intermittent mouth clicking. Possibly increased anxiety.
Thank you guys for the input I’m worried about the weight gain and I’m unsure if my doctor will go with the pills or the injectable. I mostly suffer from residual delusions.
I had a bad reaction to it, it slowed down my thoughts tremendously. But this was the first medications I was put on so these might have been symptoms of the illness.
From what I’ve read this med can make negative symptoms worse. If you don’t struggle from bad negative symptoms this shouldn’t be an issue.
I had blood flow issues from it but I’m sensitive it should be ok for you it’s good for removing anxiety it erased my ocd. With weight gain try to be active and you’ll be fine
Oh no, that’s one of the reasons I quit Haldol. I was put on Haldol to augment Latuda but I couldn’t tolerate the side effects.
I unfortunately have some bad negative symptoms.
Was the most effective AP I was ever on, pretty much completely eliminated my symptoms. Unfortunately it caused me to gain 20 lbs and raised my prolactin to a dangerous level so I had to be taken off of it Hopefully you won’t get that reaction! It was great otherwise, the only AP that didn’t give me akesthesia/bad anxiety
Sexual sideaffects were the issue for me
I’ve been on risperidone three times. the first time I was doing alright on it but my pdoc thought fanapt would be better. it wasn’t but I switched doctors and she put me on a high dose it helped but I was always tired then I moved and was stuck with the worse doctor in town, he put me back on the risperidone but it didn’t help anymore.
