New study claims to find genetic link between creativity and mental illness
Results imply creative people are 25% more likely to carry genes that raise risk of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. What are you personal experiences with this, and what are your thoughts as to the medical validity??? I for one find it reasonable - I am a musician and I come up with scientific theories and ideas quite often - and of course, look at the manic Jimi Hendrix, Beethoven, and probably Mozart, and the Schizophrenic John Nash, Tom Harrell, and Van Gogh.

I find truth in that. Id say a lot of artists are “out there” in some way whether it be mental illness or whatever else but not all “out there” people are the next Hendrix or Picasso. But then again art is art and there really is no right or wrong answer just how prolific u are with it. And what do u play?
I play guitar, bass, vocals, and piano. I mostly play jazz, funk, and fusion. Do you play music?

Dang thats awesome. And i write lyrics and play on an mpc drum machine. I want to learn the keys but with college ive never had the time. Though i can write some mean poetry and raps and sometimes ill think of an artists voice and write lyrics that id want to hear them sing. I love jazz though especially Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane. Those dudes were epic. Im a huge music nerd. Start talking about records ull get me geeking out lol

The opening to A Love Supreme and Cosmic Music was super tight. If u like Coltrane ull definitely like Pharoah Sanders especially the creator has a master plan. And Sun Ra gotta know Sun Ra the man from Saturn. For funk my favorite would have to be Parliament-Funkadelic (George Clintons group). Or Sly and the Family Stone.

I sound really old for asking this but whats popular in ur school these days. I mean knowing the funky stuff must get some likes at school unless everyone just destroys their brain cells with edm. Im not an edm fan i wont lie. Its just ur bland club music if u ask me

Yuck. Justin Bieber could make a 30 minute space jazz oddysey for all i care he’ll never be cool in my book. And i just downloaded the brecker brothers album so tight. And i was the same way in school. I never really payed attention to other people much though i did have my own music rebellion since everyone liked this terrible mainstream hip hop garbage like rick ross and lil wayne so i started getting into the hip hop scene a lot but the cool ones like del the funky homosapien or mf doom or wu tang just to revolt against the crap people were listening to, those were the days. I was the record snob at my school. Then i actually started writing raps and found it really therapeutic and fun so i still continue to this day to write weird lyrics. I wish i had a singing voice though cause i have all these ideas for vocals but need to be sung. And my singing voice isnt great

Believe me we need more record snobs or groups like Coltrane or Brecker bros will cease to exist. The only hope right now is Thundercat (bass and singer) and flying lotus (psychedelic electronic). If u don’t know them look em up they are incredible especially thundercat since u play bass ull appreciate it. Besides music what r u into

I’m a big fan of mathematics and science. Part of the reason i suspect a manic episode is because I have probably come up with 5 scientific ideas in the past few days. I just can’t focus on one of them.
U could just have a very active head. And playing music and enjoying the sciences is a lot. People who become big in something have it the same way. And ur only 13 right? keep working dude is all i gotta say just keep working and set ur mind to stuff and just keep rocking u. And i used to have similar problems with school work. I eventually worked hard enough where i wouldn’t stop one thing until it was finished took a lot of discipline but i got there
That’s good that you were able to do that. Idk if it’s really happening though. Just something I’m kinda curious about.

Well stay curious. Cause in the real world curiosity doesn’t kill the cat curiosity goes a long way. Kinda makes me wanna go back and do some things differently in school i might be in a completely different situation but im still in college so i have time and ive finally found a passion so im excited at least
I completely agree. But sometimes the thoughts (like now) are too racy. I feel like I can do ANYTHING and it is driving me crazy. I am so energetic and I don’t know if I’ll ever sleep. EVER.
