Environmental action

I worked at an academic environmental institute for a while…which was a farce in my eyes. All these people talking about theoretical nonsense, while flying allover the world for conferences.

I do think we should do a lot more to save the planet. I’m not doing enough…I dont drive or fly…I buy second hand (clothes, etc)…organic partly…but my lifestyle is still much more western than i’d like. I think we should somehow quit capitalism and start anew…but that is unlikely to happen unless with a big crash. In which case we’re ■■■■■■. I’ve thought of activism. But :woman_shrugging:

Do you care about environmental topics?

It’s easier to consume than to be repurposing everything and being restrictive on wants and needs.

It is…I’m writing about anti-capitalism from a fancy seaside hotel, right before a luxureous breakfast buffet.

I have no clue to convince the rich & powerful to give up their riches and power. But also to convince the masses to give up daily comfort and consumption. And that includes myself. :woman_shrugging:

I don’t have children which is the biggest carbon off set. I don’t drive, I haven’t flown in 20 years and I have given up beef.

In my environmental institute a colleague said: “I do not have kids…which means I can flush cans of paint through the toilet every day and still be more environmentally friendly than someone who has.”

I kind of like my kid though.

An unpleasant truth!

It is actually wrong to factory farm animals and pollute the environment with so much waste. I dont criticize anyone for having an ideal that they want to act on no matter how futile

I’m a paying member of the Sierra Club.

I have no children and no grandchildren.

I have no car and do not drive.

I take only 2 to 3 showers per week.

I do laundry approximately every 6 weeks.

It sucks that it’s almost 70 degrees in late December. I don’t know how bad it’s gonna get, but we could be doing so much more. Unfortunately in America big cars are a fad and consuming is the national past time. Every year though more carbon is pumped into the atmosphere than the year before.

I used to compost but it drove my stepmother insane so we stopped. I buy Patagonia products and only in small amounts. So I reuse my clothing often. For example I have only 3 lightweight tops and 3 shorts. In the warm months I have 3 outfits and that’s it.

Socialism’s strongest appeal for me is that it regulates resources better than capitalism. There is so much waste in a capitalistic society. For instance, if we had three or four models of car available to the public, all with good gas mileage, we could use less steel and energy resources. It could be that I am living a pipe dream, but we never have made a serious effort at implementing socialism in America. We have the resources to produce what we need in abundance. It’s problems of money and finance that are the biggest threat to our prosperity.

There’s a mass legal suit against Chemours here. The company in our city, that polluted the air/earth/water with pfas and the like. They have known the danger for decades.

This pfas chemical has been linked to adhd…to thrombosis…to liver issues…to estrogen issues (i have menstrual psychosis, myoma, thrombosis…all of which have been linked to estrogen). Also to problems I’ve seen in loved ones. You cant say what caused what…

But I have just applied to join in the lawsuit. I worry about the health risks to kid, myself and others.

Thanks for your responses, all of you. It’s nice to see people care and think what they can do.

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered here.

I was vegan for five years for the animals and environment.
Been eating meat again because of iron deficiency that no supplements helped with not even doubling doses.
Hopefully I’ll go vegan again in a year or so or mostly vegan and only little meat if my body is sick with iron deficiency and nothing else helps.

I usually buy second hand clothes and sunglasses and things.

I even buy second hand Christmas presents sometimes and when I buy new presents I try to buy local grown or environment friendly stuff.

I have done a few bad buys recently unfortunately such as I bought a t shirt for my boyfriend and it was cheap polyester and bad dyes etc I thought it would be cotton but it wasn’t environmentally friendly t shirt unfortunately.
Hopefully I’ll never buy such again.
I bought for the design that was cool and didn’t think about what material it may be.

I will hopefully go vegan again in the future.
See how I go.

Also I voted animal justice party and then greens.

That’s nice. No need to be perfect about it. A few bad buys is not wrecking the world.

Nm, politics. Not allowed.

How are some of these comments allowed? Have the rules changed recently or something? I dont mind, im just curious.

Yeah sorry…my bad. I was curious what people do with “green” stuff. But that easily is political.

We dont do censorship here like American forums. So it’s always a bit difficult to me what can and cant be said. I know the no-religion rule by now, bumping into it a few times. But only later realized this was very political, that too is not allowed, and censored myself. I’m not really sure where the line is…when it is considered political debate and when it is rather discussing how you live.
