Emotionally numb

Hi all i feel emotionally numb from the medication im taking. Are there antipsychotic medications that make it so you have emotions and dont posess blunted affect or do they all do the same thing to you. For example i also cant get drunk and dont feel high from weed not that i intend to do any. Im just wondering if different antipsychotics could make me feel better of if they all will result in me feeling weak all the time. Thanks for reading.

APs block dopamine so they reduce the effects of drugs that boost dopamine.

Weed makes me psychotic.

What meds are you taking?

Abilify, vraylar and rexulti can be easier on you in that way.

I’m on 15 mg Abilify and it’s better than other meds I’ve been on for not feeling numb.

@Aziz
Yesh weed makes me psychotic too. My point is i cant feel any dopamine at all and its a horrible feeling. Im just wondering if this is what all antipsychotics do. Are there ppl on antipsychotics that can still feel dopamine?

Yeah bud. I’m sorry but you are kinda stuck feeling this way. Although I feel like my emotions came back a little. Just took a year or so. If I drink I get paranoid. And weed is out of the question. I highly recommend you don’t do either. I know it’s tough but it keeps you more balanced to stay away from unhealthy habits. That being said I constantly chew tobacco.

@everhopeful

I take flupenexiol. Im going to ask my doctor if i can switch to seroquel. Ill try that for a year to see if i feel better. If seroquel dosnt work then ill try rexulti after.

My idea is to take every antipsychotic and find one that wont make me feel this way. I also suffer from cognitive decline so i want something that would help out with that too.

keep your depixol injection if it riddens you from the positives. Go for the addition of a second generatiion to improve of cognition and mood and feelings. I use geodon as an add on to improve those symptoms.

You should be happy over that you can’t get drunk or high of euphorias. You ser Seroquel saved me because I can’t get drunk because It. I had a long drinking carrier before I got sober 18 years ago.

@columbus i dont want to get drunk or high but it tells me i have my receptors completely blocked. I need to find a medication that dosnt make me emotio ally numb. I dont intend to get put on 2 antipsychotics. Im a simply switch to seroquel and see if it helps. If it dosnt ill switch to rexulti. Maybe ill try geodon if rexulti dosnt work. I need to try them all and find what works best for me. Hopefully there is one that helps with negative symptoms cause by the antipsychotics.

I understand your concerns. I’ve been on 3 antipsychotics the last decade and now at the age of 52 I do somehow feel drugged up so I think that I need an adjustment downwards

Rexulti did wonders for me and does not make me feel numb. Maybe a med change is in order.

@Pickpink do you have negative symptoms apathy, anhedonia. Do you have energy to do stuff or zre you tired all the time. Are you able to get drunk and high on weed or does alcohol have no effect and same with weed.

The way you keep mentioning weed and booze makes me wonder at your sincerity. What do you do that would be exciting if you weren’t on your ap?

@Treter Im am able to get stuff done, less so when im in an episode (which are rare being medicated). I have motivation and take care of the kids and make dinner. My husband helps a lot, especially when i have all the negative symptoms. I can get high off weed and drunk from alcohol, but i have 11 months sober from everything (im a previous opiate addict).

@Pickpink its good to hear your still able to cook dinner and take care of the kids. So your negative symptoms arnt too strong. I feel like ■■■■ all the time and i have trouble holding a conversation. I need to get switched to a medication that dosnt make me feel this way. I previously thought that all antipsychotics make ppl feel this way but its good to hear that dosnt seem to be the case. It gives me hope that i can find a medication that wont make me feel this way. Thank you.

@Treter yeah when i go through an episode, my negative symptoms are severe, and i dont leave the bed. I shut down, shut everyone out, stop speaking or speak monotone and slowly, i just dont care about anything. But with rexulti i have a lot of that under control. Its rare for me to get an episode while on it. Im currently in the beginning stages of one (hearing voices again, some paranoid thinking) but the negative symptoms havent appeared again yet. I started a second antipyschotic, Risperdal, in hopes of it stopping my episode from getting worse. Rexulti doesnt have that sleepy side effect like other ones do though, so I’d talk to your doctor about trying that one possibly. Theres no generic yet unfortunately, so it is a bit expensive, but i believe its truly worth it.

Yeah ive heard good things about rexulti. Ppl say they dont really experience negative symptoms on it. For me when i get off medication after s year or so i dont feel the negative symptoms anymore. I get the lositive symptoms but i dont have negatives. Im full of energy and im not emotionally numb. Im able to hold down conversations and laugh and feel good. I thought that was how it is for everyone. Its interesting that i only feel negative symptoms on antipsyxhotics but not without them. Im guessing i dont have the same disease but something else from others. I always thought everyone gets the negative symptoms and the cognitive problems from the antipsychotics but positives come from schizophrenia. The disease is more complex then i was making it out to be it seems.

@Pickpink how are you cognitively. Are you fine cognitively or are you kind of slow and have trouble concentrating?

@treter - im fine cognitively currently. Like with negative symptoms, episodes cause some issues in that area.
