Emergency appointment at Dentist - better than expected, well kinda!

My support staff rang the dentist today and they offered me an emergency appointment within 30 minutes and the cost would be £89, I have severe toothache which I was thought just needed a filling, turns out my wisdom tooth is broke at the back and I have an infection under the tooth. They made me an appointment with a clinic in the city for me and for them take wisdom tooth out and proscribed me Penicillin. Thats the bad news

The good news is that they’ve taken me back on as an NHS patient again (they took me off because I haven’t been to the dentist since 2019) so this means I get free dental care and perceptions) They refunded my £89 check up fee. So won’t cost me anything as I’m on benefits. He was a really nice dentist to do that as they are not taking new patients on at that clinic, otherwise I would have had to pay. I’m feeling better about it now.

What are the dentists like where you are if you need dental treatment, is it expensive?

Tooth ache is a nightmare. Remember you wont be able to have a beer! lol. You dont want an abcess. All mine got ripped out years ago.

I’ve been off the beer for a few weeks now, so that wouldn’t be a issue.

Check-ups are almost free. Some dental work is covered by the Government in Belgium.

But if you need dentures or implants, I believe the coverage is limited to about 1000€ which isn’t a lot.

My last dentist in my small town was awful and he did a real number on my remaining teeth. It definitely was expensive and I had limited benefits for a while. I am so much happier without teeth and having dentures instead.

I have two options for any dental work I need. My employer gives us these things called FCE cards which all I have to do is show a dentist and he will give me most dental work for half price. These cards are free.

Or I’ve been using Medical (Medicaid) this past year. A root canal usually cost $1800 but with Medicaid paying, it cost around $500. I just got two crowns put on and one I paid nothing and the second one I paid $200 when the full price is $1900.

The dentist was OK, he did the work efficiently with little pain.

I should take a trip to the dentist myself. It’s not lack of money that deters me, it’s fear of pain and stumbling upon an unskilled doctor.
A simple filling costs between €50-100.
Root canal or extraction prices go up to €300. Crowns probably €400-500.
Implants can go as high as €2000 but I hope to avoid that.

My insurance does not cover teeth.

I had one or two broken in the back thanks to wisdom teeth and breastfeeding. I had all mine pulled at one setting and got dentures. It was cheaper than fixing mine.

And screw some dental pain that NOTHING relieved the pain.

Glad you’re getting it sorted! And good job getting reestablished for regular care.

I cannot imagine getting all my teeth pulled in one sitting! :grimacing:

I have had to get five molars pulled one a time in the last ten years, after badly neglecting my teeth for 14 years prior. I am a crybaby when I have to get one out…yikes.

I have really good dental insurance through my husband’s job, but when I was paying out of pocket, it was outrageously expensive. No way I could have afforded it. My savings account is thousands of dollars depleted from paying for crowns and extractions.

That is savage! I almost wetted my pants just imagining myself doing that. Never had an extraction (yet), still mustering some courage for my wisdom teeth.
