The cost of dental work

Because of the sz diagnosis I went a while without taking very good care of myself. Consequently my teeth were not properly taken care of. So now I have s bunch of dental work that had to be done and wow is it expensive. Major bummer.

Same here actually. I have to get at least two more wisdom teeth removed, I’ve already had one out.

I also need to get a bunch of fillings.

My next appointment isn’t until August! I’m in so much pain.

Wow! Well done. That sounds like a good deal!

Yeah, my family wasn’t stepping up to the plate for my dental care, and my insurance was kakaa. For nineteen years I went twice a year to the local hygienist college to have my teeth cleaned for free. Then my gums gave out from smoking. Knock on wood, I’m nearly two years free of smoking now.

My mom has already probably put $1000 towards getting my teeth taken care of…unfortunately when my step dad was dying I was not able to have my mom take me to the dentist and since it was a college of dentristry I was dropped from the program still needing two crowns on each side of my upper jaws. drag.

i have several cavities that need work but i have no money. lucky none of them are to the point of causing pain

I spent 4,000$ on dental work his year. I feel your pain. It has to be done though. You can bet I brush and floss every single day now.

My dentist took Medicaid. Medicaid is medical benefits from my state of California. It’s like Medicare but it is from California. I get health coverage from both Medicare and Medicad.

My dentist was in private practice but he would take on two patients a year who were low-income and were covered by Medicaid.
Also, I’ve heard that some dentists will charge for dental work on a sliding scale for low-income people or let you make payments instead of having to come up with a huge lump sum.

Also, you may want to look around and see if there is a Dental College near you. Dental colleges will do most types of dental work (including having wisdom teeth pulled out) for a fraction of what most dentists charge. if there is a college near you I would call them up and ask questions. Tell them what dental work you need done and ask who will be doing it.

I have had my wisdom teeth pulled out by a college and they did a good job but the procedure took longer than it should have. I also had surgery to pull out a tooth. They did a fine job. But I will be honest and tell you that there is a slight risk involved by going to a dental college. The students know what they are doing but they have not have the years of experience that some dentists in private practice.

But obviously the students are fine because if they didn’t know what they are doing in the first place, there is no way that a dental school would let them do something so detailed like dental work. the school would not risk being sued by letting someone who is inept or incompetent do work on a patient. So the school trusts these students to do dental work and so I would trust them too. To a point.

I haven’t been to a dentist in around 15 years. I know I need a lot of work done, and I know I can’t afford it, so I keep putting it off, which only makes matters worse and ensures that when I do finally go it will cost even more.

Read my answer above, the wcifer.

I saw that, and I’ll have to look into that and see if there are any dental schools near me. That would be a good solution.

Congrats on quitting to smole!

I am getting ready to have an implant put in. The Implant and the surgery involved will cost $4350. Then I have to pay MY dentist for the cap on the implant.

Dentistry is unlike other medical expenses, in that dentists don’t care that you need work, they just won’t give you treatment if you can’t pay. Other medical bills have separate funding sources for low-income people. The discrimination in dentist care against the poor is classism.

I need dental work and I just got denied for that “Care Credit,” the only way I’d be able to pay for it, because I owe on a credit card and my student loans (loans in deferment, but it’s like 40K).

At some point, gov should really look at dental care as a medical necessity and should fund it accordingly.

I’m sorry everyone here has had to pay outrageous sums of money we can’t afford just to chew. That’s not right.
Here’s a frontline review on dental care and how many Americans go without care because of its exclusive expenses.

Yeah, I remember watching that Frontline episode some years ago. Really sad that dental care isn’t provided to all who need it.

People may mistakenly think of dental work as being a “cosmetic” procedure but it is actually medically necessary for good general health. For example, poor dental health can result in dangerous bacteria migrating to other parts of the body such as the heart. Also, untreated dental absesses, especially those in the upper jaw, can get into the sinuses and can, in some cases, be fatal if left untreated.
