A doctor recommended ECT for me, and I’d like to get others’ opinions of the treatment… Actually, this is the second time it’s been suggested but I was scared before about losing my memory…
Anyone been through it to describe the benefits?
I’m not even sure if I’ve got the name right, he just told me ECT
I’ve never had ECT before, but I have seen it do a lot of good. There was this one guy who tried to commit suicide and who was severely depressed. They kept him strapped to a bed for about four months, and then they gave him electroconvulsive therapy. He perked right up. He seemed much happier.
I talked to a woman who liked it; said it eliminates depression…
That’s just for her, because she went through an assult, with head trauma…
I’d like to get others’ viewpoints
Ect is good for treatment resistant sz and depression… u can try it to belive it…
Now a days ECT is given to unmanageable /uncontrollable patients. It is not a regular treatment option. Present trend is treating any psychiatric illness with medicines only. I know people who were given ECT. It is true that some cognitive damage occurs and also the relapse rate is very high. You did not mention why you were suggested ECT. Any way as far as I know it is better to take conventional treatment with medicines rather than going for ECT.
ECT is done when meds fail. If meds fail, and the alternative is leaving someone untreated.
I’ve never had it, but there’s a few people here who have had success with it.
I’ve heard mixed opinions on it. I have 2 friends who had ECT, both for severe depression. One friend had no improvement from the treatment and suffered some short term memory loss. The other was so depressed she actually believed (had the delusion) she was dead already, I think she had about 5 sessions and it worked miracles for her. She’d been in hospital for over 6 months and tried all sorts of drugs, the ECT was what finally helped her and she was able to go back to work and look after her young family after having been severely ill for a long time.
ECT scares me honestly
@HulGil has had ECT and it was very successful for them, as far as I know.
So, positive results?
I get ECT and my positive symptoms became better. and i have better facial expressions and have more energy, i am more active and my language fluency is also better
I had ECT in October and November, 6 total treatments, and it really helped with my persistent suicidal ideation. It helped me quit thinking constantly about ways to kill or hurt myself. I’m getting maintenance treatments once a month now.
I have had some short term memory issues, but I’d rather forget that Friday is laundry day than be burning myself with cigarettes. These issues have resolved as I had more time between treatments. I’ve only had one post-ECT headache which occurred after my first treatment and that was because they had to shock me 4 times to find the proper “dose” to induce a seizure. But since I was asleep it wasn’t a big deal. I actually LIKE the feeling in my head that occurs as the anesthetic is administered and I fall asleep.
It hasn’t really made a huge difference in my psychotic symptoms, but I am SO grateful that I’m not having so much suicidal ideation.
ECT is pretty painless, too, with only the possible headache and the IV insertion causing pain. Give it a go, it might help.
My experience with ECT was NOT good.
