My strap dad is type 1 diabetic and they still let him drive.
He has found himself out driving around with low blood sugar more than a few times…

Actually, after reading this post I did some math. Counting the cost of my car, gas, Insurance, it costs me over $300 a month to own a car.
But I place such a high value of being able to go anywhere I want! I would be better off financially if Illinois took my DL away though.
Tough choice… hopefully nothing changes I guess…
You can have a DL and not use it. People will make assumptions if you tell them your DL was taken away.
Yes, I could get rid of my car and keep my DL. I think I would go stir crazy without a car. But it’s good to know that if I’m in a pinch I can always Uber it to the grocery store once a week.
I take stupid car trips just to get out of the house. Like, this morning I drove to the town overs grocery store just to get salsa. (The salsa is worth the drive btw)
When I go from DLA to PIP benefit changeover I really don’t want them to award me hight rate PIP mobility. I think getting that would prevent me from travelling abroad on my own. I would like low rate PIP. I have bad anaxity when catching public transport especially when unwell and thinking people are thinking bad things about me or staring at me especially school aged teenagers in groups.
idk, i get low mobility dla, i’ll be happy with just the care component but truth is off meds i’m a wreck, i cant go outside on my own let alone drive and i’m even scared in my own home.
i’d need it for taxis and i’d need support going out too, god help me if my med was discontinued or banned or something
I literally catch one bus to meet my named nurse, he moved to a different down 30 miles away but kept me on, we meet half way… I only catch that bus because its a rural route where only old people catch the bus. I wouldn’t cope with unfamiliar journeys. I’m hoping that will change after starting CBT. Anxiety sucks!
i’ve been driving long… everything is far away. better to go slower when older , increases thinking and reaction time.
Yeah I knew a guy who had seizures and drove had a drivers license. They went always under control though
Dont think the dmv knew.
I had to hand my license in July 2017. I am hoping to hear back in a week to see if I can drive again.
I am taking it to court this time if they say no again.
Unfortunately you will have to keep your fingers crossed.
@Joker what state do you live in…if you dont mind me asking.
That’s fine. I am not in the US I am in the UK. Sounds like a similar thing here based on the questions they ask.
That’s just great I’m in tx & my DL is up for renewal this year, I don’t recall that question being on there last time I renewed… https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Mental-health-questions-on-driver-s-license-5147289.php
The article says most people just lie. So that’s what I would do. They obviously have no database to check up on this there would be a lot more than 242 people taken into consideration.
Yes but the article is old 2014 about the time they just started implementing it on renewals before we just had that question with never/new licenses… I just worry that when getting pulled over they often ask questions like what are you doing here where do you work & the like & if i mention that im not employed and have a mental illness they could check to see if I submitted that during my license renewal… Or possibly during a jury duty summons when I tell them why I can’t attend… I don’t know really
This question is asked during the initial application for a dl. I dont think it is asked during the renewal process.
Never mind sorry I now read the rest
This is very bad for some people where public transportation is practically non-existent and can make you a second class citizen. I’d suggest that you lie about it if you hear of others being rejected. In my town in TN over 90% of the people in it have their own cars and it has been a nightmare for me to not be able to drive due to my eyes.
