When I passed my driving test they asked me if I had a medical condition and I said I had schizophrenia, now they send me a yearly form to be filled by my pdoc to see if I’m eligible to drive. It irritates me to no end. On top of that my pdoc charges me 30$ every time he fills the paper, not sure if he’s even allowed to do that in his practice, if you add that to the fees for renewing the license I decided I was better off cancelling it since I don’t have a car and I’ll just renew it within 3 years.
Anyone in a similar situation? Did they ask if you had a medical condition when you passed your test, and do you have to comply with providing yearly documents to keep your driver’s license benefits?
My doctor says I am not fit drive. Surprisingly no because of the sedation but rather I could seriously freak out if police pulled up behind me. He thinks I might do something stupid - he is probably right.
I’ve been to the DMV many times on business, like renewing my drives license, getting duplicate registration, registering a new (used) car. I’ve been driving since I was 17 (with some gaps) and the fact that I’m schizophrenic has never come up.I don’t volunteer the information and they never ask. Incidentally since I was diagnosed in 1980 I have been in only one accident that was my fault. I’ve gotten several tickets though. Once in 1991 I got pulled over by a cop in my Cadillac. I had a guy with me who was probably schizophrenic, in the passenger side. The cop let me of with a warning and was letting me go but my passenger started laughing LOUDLY and wouldn’t stop. The cop walked back to see what was going on and it came out that we were schizophrenic.I remember all the cop said was that it was perfectly fine to drive while schizophrenic but if I ever got pulled over and I was drowsy or over-medicated that a cop could write me up for a DUI.
