Hey guys , as above,thoughts?
Not sure if it causes it but it does make me psychotic most of the time for one day. My friends who smoke it didn’t get psychosis, only me, so maybe its sz genetics too.
Some people say it does and research points that way.
However, I think we’d have way more schizophrenics if it did.
I’ve been smoking everyday of my life since I was twelve.
My symptoms go back as far as I can remember.
Weed has never made me go into psychosis or worsen my symptoms at all.
So really, I think it depends on the individual.
I think marijuana use at a young age can damage the brain and cause sz.
In a neuroscience class I took they taught us that weed causes memory problems. My memory is very weak of when I was high.
Smoking weed will just increase your positive symptoms. Paranoids Sz’s shouldnt touch the stuff.
That drug seems to be the primary one Sz’s goto to alleviate temporarily their symptoms - but dont expect your anti-psychotics to work.
Most of the time smoking weed made me feel bad it didnt affect me the way it does most people.
I’ve never used Mary Jane since being DXed. Used it copiously prior. I’m sure it didn’t help, but we know that there was some SZ in my family on my mom’s side. An aunt that everyone described as "silly’ for sure.
It hugely raises your chances especially before age 18
Still very concerning after
Everyone who has had psychosis can relapse straight away
Especially anything strong
If it did I think the people who smoke a lot would have become schizophrenic anyway due to stress or any other thing without weed.
I love those drinks they sell that are like a bunch of cbd and a little thc two and I’m good!
I dont think it causes it. I think it can worsen it or depending on the person, if I smoke I get super paranoid and crazy. Some people don’t have that reaction though, and it helps with their pain or chills them out. I think it all depends on the person and marijuana as a medical tool is fairly safe. I just don’t smoke it myself because it makes me worse.
That’s what I was going to say. Personally, marijuana is not a good high for me. It makes me think things I don’t want to think. Alcohol was my poison, God help me.
The majority of people diagnosed with schizophrenia had substance abuse issues. That’s usually attributed to most of us had underlying brain chemistry issues we were trying to fix using weed etc, and not causing schizophrenia itself. The flat 1% rate of people who get schizophrenia is everywhere, so there is no direct correlation with smoking weed and getting schizophrenia. I was told by my pysch that it certainly exacerbates the illness and can cause the inevitable onset to develop sooner and a psychotic break to occur earlier. This is just what I’ve read/been told.
My thought broadcasting started after smoking weed everyday and using hallucinogens, however i had some hallucinations since i was a kid so i think maybe weed and psychedelics exacerbate it in some people.
I smoked cannabis a lot from 20 to 25. I was at uni for some of those years so I could get away with being a bit crazy. Also early on most of the time it was resin which has always agreed with me more. When skunk came on the scene more in the mid 90s I started to have a worse time. Until eventually one toke would send me psychotic for days. It seems like a switch just went off in my head.
According to the book “Surviving Schizophrenia” While use of drugs may cause similar symptoms and may exacerbate the symptoms of a person with schizophrenia, there is virtually no evidence that the use of drugs can actually cause schizophrenia.
I think drugs can cause schizophrenia. If you take 100 random people and give them loads of different drugs daily, for months on end, their brains will be fried/scrambled and they will permanently lose touch with reality. I’ve read stuff online about people taking lsd and shrooms and ending up mentally ill. They wouldn’t have become schizo if they hadn’t touched drugs.
I have no doubt that drugs can cause brain damage…the book even mentions that but, according to research they don’t cause schizophrenia. You’re free to believe whatever you like but I’m just telling you what the doctor who’s been studying schizophrenia for ages says.
Idk what to believe, but perhaps drug use can cause identical symptoms to schizophrenia via different mechanisms? I know people with brain injury from accidents can end up with schizophrenia too.
