I just read that Clozapine has the lowest sexual dysfunction and lowest Tarditive dyskinesia rate. Who esle takes this medicine? does it work? why dont doctors go straight to this med?
Also i read that if you take either (bromocriptine, cabergoline) with it sexual dysfunction and prolactin issues go away
My son is taking Clozapine. Currently one of the few meds he is being compliant with although at a low dose. Yes it carries a lower risk. Generally speaking it seems to be a last resort med perhaps due to it’s affect on white blood cells. Statistically I think it has a 40-60% success rate of helping to manage symptoms.
I used to take Clozapine in 2004, it may have the lowest sexual dysfunction rate (good news for me) but it has the worst sedation and drooling rate in my opinion. I was a zombie on the meds!
If you are on it, do not mess around with the blood tests. Go have them. I didn’t and the bloody med wiped out my white blood cells. It’s rare, but it does happen.
All these side effects are “rare.” companies should be working on discovering new meds but they arent, I was so suprised at that. Not one company is researching making antipsychotics better either this or last year.
ay dios mio. All this stuff ive been going through has me thinking they should privatize health care research at least. Why are they letting companies decide lives, that shits not currently working
I’ve been taking clozapine for about 5 years now and it’s a the only med that ever did anything for me. The side effects are mild compared to the other meds and it’s kept me out of the hospital. Doctors don’t go straight to this med because it can rarely cause a problem with your white cell count and regular blood tests are required.
it did not work for me and created unlivable side effects. i could detail those, but as every person is different, perhaps not relevant. there are others in programs i’m in currently or have been in who are alive because of it though and i wouldn’t discourage anyone from giving it a go. the blood draws can suck as it starts with weekly and the hypersalivation/drooling i second as being a given in my experience, but when it works, it’s pretty awesome i’ve seen.
as for why not all doctors do, you have to be on a registry, like, the doctor does. not all psychiatrists can prescribe it. if you don’t have solid insurance i’ll bet it’s expensive as hell, too, especially with the bloodwork and so forth. i’m not on medicaid/medicare, but i can imagine the government not wanting to incur the cost. though that may be cynical of me. good luck with it if you go that route.
