Does anybody else have Hypothyroidism (low thyroid)?

Are severe muscle spasms a symptom of schizophrenia?
When i go psychotic i have all the symptoms of Hyperthyroidism (high thyroid)
Maybe thyroid problems are associated with SZ ?
My dr.s act like they don’t have a clue.

I’m hypothyroidic There are times I think it might be part of my sch. They tested my thyroid decades ago + found it to be alright. I wasn’t hypothyroidic then.

I don’t think science knows enough to say.

I have low thyroid and have been on meds for that for decades. I don’t know if it contributed to my getting schizophrenia but it seemed I was way more emotional and sensitive before getting on meds for it.

…is very easy to determine. Have you been tested? What were the results? Do you know how far your thyroxine is out of range?

Symptoms like that around sz are more often connected to some combination of med sfx, diet problems, insufficient fluid intake, stress (eg: from over-exertion) and very possibly serum salt imbalances… OR…

They may not actually be muscle “spasms” per se, but releases of affective energy connected to past trauma, which is very common with a range of psychiatric disorders. I occasionally have these seemingly spontaneous “attacks” of spastic, wrenching motions combined with feelings of panic.

Do you have anything like that?

Yes severe muscle spasms and extreme panic. It was back in Jan i went to the er, they kept me over night and gave me iv fluid. Told me i was dehydrated but my urine was clear and after the ativan shot wore off i was up all night having to go
I’ve been on levothyroxine for over 20 years i started taking it shortly after i first went psychotic when i was adddicted to xanax and my dr said i could stop cold turkey
This past Jan was the 3rd time i had muscle spasms and panic and went to the e r
The er dr said my thyroid tests were ok. I told her i thought i had hyperthyroidism symptoms and she asked ME how much i should reduce my thyroid med, so i don’t have much confidence in them.
I stopped taking the levo for a while and that helped stop the spasms. I don’t take benzos at all since i was addicted and i’ve been on 1.25 mg zyprexa since '97 it’s the only thing that helps me sleep and i can’t take the generic or stronger dose it makes me very sick (cant sleep, panicky )

Sounds plausible, for sure. Do those symptoms include tachycardia or not?

They can be helpful, but they’re risky, as you likely already know.

Really fractional dose, similar to my 12.5 mg of Seroquel to shut the Voices up and help me sleep.

I think I hear “a little too much levothyroxine” and a possible need to dig for experiential causes for the panic attacks, which are pretty likely not solely the result of levothyroxine OD. Do you have any sort of a trauma history? Ever dx’d with PTSD… or complex PTSD?

Since PTSD and trauma histories are very common for sz pts, these seem like trees worth barking up. There are plenty of great treatments for it.

See Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - Symptoms and causes - Mayo Clinic, though many with complex PTSD that is not the result of a single catastrophic event (like a firefight in the Vietnam jungle) may not have access to the specific memories underlying the symptoms.
