Do your meds make you feel stoned?

Sometimes they make me high, I don’t know why. Then I feel like I’m actually in a dream. I can’t go in public like that. I can’t function well at all. Everything goes in slow motion. I know I must appear to be a drunken sailor. Did that ever happen to you?

Yeah, but not from my meds. It is from my migraines. They make me feel drunk and sick too. I also get depersonalization, vertigo and when I try to read, the text moves.

Nope. Just get tired like I’m high or drunk.

the benzos do that for me. most psych meds currently available claim to work by varied mechanisms, but many of them simply act like a dimmer for brain activity. esp the antipsychotics, they block messages along certain pathways and promote messaging along others. they are “dirty drugs” in that they tamper with many different neurotransmitters, they aren’t selective for just dopamine. so that doped up feeling you’re describing might either be that dimming effect, or one of the many effects these drugs have in our brain which are not fully understood. either way, these effects can produce euphoria in some people, though i think that effect is somewhat rare. it may have something to do with increasing certain neurotransmitters like serotonin or decreasing messages sent by others such as dopamine.

the other possibility is that you’re taking medications like klonopin, valium and xanax, which are known drugs of abuse and which can produce euphoria in many users.

The meds make me a little bit “stoned” but its not the APs im on - its usually the diazapam im prescribed for anxiety. Seem to feel it more when i take 10mg when already tired. I dont feel a thing on the Paliperadone Jab…

what’s the difference between being high or stoned?

Seroquel does that to me. I get dizzy, sluggish, slow and tired, and things feel a little bit more far away, like they take longer to reach me.

If you’re stoned, you’re essentially doped down.
If you’re high, you’re more uplifted than usual due to meds or drugs.

Stoned is down, high is up
