Do you think that anxiety is over-diagnosed

for the general population? I feel like everybody is claiming to have anxiety now. Kids, my sister, etc.

If I didn’t go bat ■■■■ crazy when I start missing my anxiety meds I wouldn’t believe in anxiety.

How would you know you have anxiety? Symptoms would have to be bad enough to seek medical attention for them. But for me anxiety is like schizophrenia where you dont really know that you have it. Things just end up bad and you end up in the hosptal.

I think there’s more to these people’s problems than some feelings of anxiousness.

Anxiety is shared by all humans. Do you mean a diagnosable anxiety disorder? I think with all disorders it is over and under diagnosed. People go undiagnosed that definitely have it and others get misdiagnosed.

Just my two cents, but I do believe that high anxiety rates are the normal in our western capitalistic society.

Pressure to hold a job and work harder than you should, pressure to not be sick, weak, ask for help, judge yourself by money and status.

I can see why that would bring people anxiety. At least enough to need therapy

Not at all.

In fact, I believe anxiety is the baseline for most mental illnesses.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Human beings are socially dependent creatures. We evolved to rely on our community and our family for help. Our modern society looks down on and punished those who ask for help, and praises self-sufficiency. But that level of self sufficiency harms our social human brains.

Anxiety becomes problem when your functioning is affected by it. In normal people also anxiety is there but they are not affected by it like anxious people.

I don’t think it’s over diagnosed . I think the pressures of our increasingly more competitive, dog eat dog society does a number on young children and adolescents .

Going to echo other users here and posit that modern society itself is inherently anxiety-inducing, therefore most anxiety diagnoses are warranted.

I agree that this society is anxiety inducing, but I also think especially young people self-diagnose with anxiety when they might just be nervous ro stressed.
