Do you really need to change the oil in your car every 3000 miles?

Yeah synthetics are the business but most mechanics I use don’t use them. Use the cheap to maximise profits so if your not doing it yourself it’s a moot point.

Yeah. You can get synthetic but a mechanic will charge you premium anyways I’ve found.

Please discuss.

An oil change costs me a $100 including the synthetic oil and oil filter. A little expensive but that’s what my car requires. The article says you may not need synthetic oil in certain cars. I assumed that the labor cost of putting in synthetic oil vs regular is the same. So maybe you can buy your own synthetic oil and have the mechanic put it in for you.

$100 US for synthetic and a filter I’d do everyday and not complain.

Australia is a small market in Asia. We pay premium for service and products and we also have a weak dollar to the US at the moment. Like 70 cents in the dollar so everything is more expensive.

A reason people still don’t use synthetic but your getting a good deal and I’d use it and go for it.

It costs me about $30 USD as I do the change myself. It’s fast and easy. I only use full synthetic.

Believe me, it is faithful to change your oil. If you change your oil, then all the rest of the stuff stays together. As a principle, you should change it every 3 months or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. Believe me, a lot depends on it. So do it.

Some synthetic oils say they last for 10k miles. But what they don’t say is that the oil still gets dirty. So it’s still important to change it way sooner than the lifespan of the oil.

I’ve driven about 8k miles and have booked my car in for an oil and filter change after reading this thread. It’s very easy to do yourself all you need is some basic ramps, a bucket and some oil.

My car takes synthetic oil, and I get it changed every 5000 miles. What sucks is I have to get all maintenance done at the dealership for the sake of keeping the warranty intact. Kinda expensive, but not as expensive as replacing an engine, gotta keep that warranty.

Edit: all of my previous cars took conventional oil, which I had changed every 3000 miles.
