I’d probably just wave back 
Back in the old days on a road trip as a teenager we would toot the horn and wave at complete strangers for fun.
It amused me anyway…

I used to resent it. But I realize that sometimes strangers are just being kind or welcoming. I have no reason to be hostile about it, so I will be kind in response. I don’t have a problem unless they are trying to get something from me.

I think the ideal way of dealing with this would be if you see some guy you dont know waving at you just walk up to him, shake his hand and say “HI Bob, how you been? How are Suzy and the kid? Did that rash ever resolve itself?” or something to this effect.
I would also recommend recording it and posting it here.

I don’t have a chip on my shoulder.
If someone is nice enough to be friendly to me than I’ll return the favor.
I smile at people all the time because in the past friends have told me that I have an “angry look” to me.

I think an example for me is when we go to an Asian restaurant/grocery store we are usually treated really strangely. They ask us terribly invasive questions, give the children treats, talk to me in their native language, etc. When the kids were younger they would ruffle their hair or pick them up. Complete strangers. It would annoy me but I get why they liked our family so I would be friendly back. Now when we walk into the same places they give me free tea and treats and I’m like not gonna ever say no to that.
