Murder and rape is disgusting.
I find it unfortunate that good looking women get more attention than ugly looking women.
But idk, I should be happy for them ofcourse
⦠And I am.
But at the same time it just seems strangeā¦i donāt understand?
What would be examples of ālowlyā vs āhaughtyā?
Lowly would be i guess a homeless person and haughty a billionaire
Ah okay.
So is value then dependent upon the net worth of an individual?
How do we then ascribe value to actual people?
What do we as humans value?
I mean it seems to be the case, in general
Well thats a whole other thing, how to evaluate people. Theres different ways obviously. I like to think everyone is equal but ive been a homeless schizophrenic so i know equality is not ironclad. I like sign value theory of baudrillard if you have different signs attached to you you are seen as having more value or less
Truth. Hope your situation is better now .
Will check him out for sure, thanks.
Im not an expert on sign value theory but basically he uses structuralism like the theory how words have meaning and says basically the relationship between signs creates kind of a complex where value and differences in percieved value are created. Like how brand name clothing and unbranded clothing are made in the same factory but they are percieved differently
We arenāt equal. There are people smarter than me and dumber than me. Now, is either group better than me? No, that is a subjective judgment. In the same way, there are many people more wealthy than me. They are worth more monetarily but that doesnāt equate to happiness, so what is that money worth? If Iām an old man and I canāt spend my money doing fun things, then a young broke person who does fun things has a more worthy life, at least from my perspective. All appraisals of peopleās worth are subjective. I think it is impossible to be entirely impartial and treat everyone like theyāre equal, because we make judgments about the world and others in order to survive. Weāre different. That doesnāt make one of us better than the other, though, it just means that we are all unique.
Everyone is born a baby. So yes. Do we all become something later on, and create some sort of relative value based on what we contribute to the world that really couldnāt be quantified? If I were to save people in a burning building would I ask what their profession was before doing it so I can go through some sort of moral calculus to see how important they are?
What we do or contribute doesnāt really alter every personās immense innate value.
In an ideal society, everyone is born equal and are free to make themselves whatever they want. Moreover, an ideal society would have no murderers or rapists. It seems impossible, but should be a goal.
Good looking vs Ugly are just states of mind. All is in the eye of the beholder and I truly believe that there is somebody for everybody out there. Who I find good looking, the next guy might not and it could simply be something as the shape of a nose, length of a neck etc. Thank God because then everybody would be after the same woman, or man or whatever.
First, please note that I did not read all of the posts, just the first few.
Do I think all people are of equal value? Yes and no. In an emergency situation, a doctor might have more value because of their training. In a natural disaster, someone who can do physical labor, construction workers, etc might have more value. Overall/day-to-day, though? Yes. I think a life is a life, and priority shouldnāt be given because of the size of oneās bank account, oneās societal standing, etc.
I grew up very poor- government housing, single parent, me and my sisters all dropped out of school and had kids by 14/15. My sisters were married at 14 and 17. Didnāt always have food, clean clothes, etc. In my experience, people treated us like less overall. Even family. Even when we were little kids and couldnāt help it. The worst ones were those who were in a higher social class. Iām not in that situation anymore. I didnāt get to complete my doctorate because of MI onset, but I was working towards an EdD. My goal was, and still is, to make a difference for the economically disadvantaged. There is a group near me that takes volunteers for ESOL, Citizenship, and GED classes as well as offering a food bank and family help. Iāve worked with the beginning ESOL group, and they are absolutely fantastic people. All were low-income migrants, some illegal. They were my favorite students ever. They even made it funny when they cheated- out loud and obvious.
Being low income was more communal. People would knock on the door regularly to borrow sugar, milk, etc. Sometimes, youād share a holiday with another family because you needed to combine resources to have enough. People would watch each otherās kids if help was needed. Where Iām at now? They would rather die than ask for help and would have a coronary if asked to help. So I certainly donāt believe that money or class makes a person worthwhile.
I believe that people are people. We all deserve a chance. We shoulf all be treated equally. I guarantee you that politician, that finance manager, and that movie star have made mistakes just like the plumber, the factory worker, the disabled woman, and the hooker. Just people.
Thanks for all the input
Iām just gonna read later when I get the chance
Sorry I donāt really understand but thankyou for the input.
Iām just talking about value of a person though.
Like worthiness.
Perhaps ppl who do bad stuff really are less valuable but then who determines who is most valuable. Like it sort of sets the stage for a value scale. Itās weirdā¦
thanks for thanking.
