Do we have to take our medication for life?

My Psychiatrist recently said that i can stop medication in 3 years time and see how things go… at which point i asked him that will it be safe if i quit medication… to which the psychiatrist said that many people have successfully come off of their medication after using it for 3-4 years.

Have any of you successfully come out of your medication ?

I am from India and I got diagnosed with Schizophrenia in 2019…

Depends on your case, it’s different for everyone. I’ll probably be on mine for life because when I try to quit things go bad quickly.

I’ve been on Geodon currently about a year without a gap, though I’ve been on it before that. I still have positives. Also Seroquel for 2 years.

Well my Psychiatrist sats that they consider to take their patients off medication and give them a chance only if the patient has used the medication for 3 years or more continuously without showing any signs of symptoms…

So i suggest you keep taking your medication for atleast 3-4 years and then maybe talk to your psychiatrist.

Just saying you’ll learn a lot. Both @anon82948922 and I are off APs for different reasons.

Wow!! That’s amazing… i mean whatever the reasons are i am sure it feels good to come off of medications and live without the burden ? I guess…

How has your life been post the quitting of APs ?

Do u feel lighter and more active ? (In a normal way)

Four years ago my pdoc took away my zyprexa. Things went bad very quickly. I have to take my medication for life, which is a good thing, because it helps me.

Same as before, but I function a lot better.

I don’t know what lighter means. I am more active, though.

My brain isn’t slowed anymore.

I got off my medication over fifteen years ago and was stable and well three years before I was hospitalised and put back on medication.

That happened also about twenty three years ago or so I quit medication and was ok for a year before I was hospitalised.
