Do vitamin supplements really work

I am doing a test. In the past I have been taking many vitamin supplements in the morning with my meds, but today I just took my meds without these supplements. It is already 2 pm and I have been feeling great, even better than when I took these supplements. So my question is ‘Do these vitamin supplements really work?’ or ‘Are these unnecessary?’.

They say that if you are eating healthy/well balanced diet - taking vitamins are not necessary. With that said, I take a multi vitamin in the morning, first thing. I eat well, but I take a multi vitamin any way, out of habit.
I dont know if its necessary, but I take it regardless. I do think that people afflicted with schizophrenia and bipolar etc… can benefit from taking fish oil capsules - especially EPA. I take prescription strength fish oil - Lovaza for high triglycerides but I am sure it is benefiting me in other areas.
Taking vitamins/supplements instead of proper medications is always a dumb idea

I’m not good at diagnosing myself.

I’ve never noticed a benefit. The one exception was fish oil and joint pain.

had a very good experience with vitamin b3 bit it was after months at that topo after 5 months.had some good experiences iwth herbs like centella asiatica which has many vitamins and minerals .alzo zinc and manganese are doing well. see you need to identify three things

  1. do you have a defeciency
  2. do you have an allerrgy to a particluar food or even vitamin
  3. the amount of time you take the vitamin

vitamins and minerals help if you have a defeciency in that vitamin if you take something that is aldready in excess it can cause a problem .then you need to give atleats 3-6 months time for the vtamin to work

I take a combination of things and wouldn’t change it for the world.

Works well in combination with my meds. So far with therapy and this have had a reduction of one of meds after a failed reduction of both of my meds. So isn’t a cure all but all helps. Also all that I get from my local supermarket to cut costs.

I take 1 1000mg omega 3 fish oil tablet and a couple of vitimin B complex and zinc as well as eat lots of fresh fruit each day,

With my Olanzapine. I don’t know if it really works, because the change was so gradual.

That being said I did manage to get discharged my my psychiatrist back to my family GP.

Yes, they can work but this is dependent on a few things; type of supplement, absorption and strength. Iron, for example, needs to be taken with Vitamin C in order for it to absorb properly.

Strength is important to; I knew I had a vitamin D deficiency so I started taking the recommended dose. 1 year later, I was still very deficient (proven by blood tests). My doctor advised I needed to take 4 times the recommended dose to see any benefit. My main symptom was hair loss, which few associate with Vitamin D. Within 3 months of taking the higher dose, my rate of shedding reduced by 90%. I lose a few strands compared to losing huge clumps.

I’ve also seen benefit from Iron and B12 injections but again, I had a proven deficiency and insisted on more serious forms of supplementation because the stuff I was buying from shops, although costly, weren’t making a dent in my levels.

Another thing that I know works are pro and pre biotics; we don’t really give our guts enough attention when it comes to our well-being but our digestive system plays a huge role in well-being and drugs can affect the natural balance of things. So, if you’re constipated or bloated, you might want to look into these.

I don’t do multi-vitamins because I think they’re ineffective - they try to address everything at once and in reality we pee most of it out.

Dear Louisa84,

I understand that the human body cares a lot whether it gets D2 or D3. My nutritionist has me on D3. Apparently, my family doctor doesn't know the dfference between D2 and D3.

Jayster

There’s a big difference between the 2 - your nutritionist is right on, Vitamin D3 (cholecalcifriol?) is the only form we should be using as D2 can actually be harmful. The main difference is that D3 is what we would get from the sun, for example - it’s a lot more potent, stays in the system for longer and is converted to a usable form within the body far quicker. D2 does none of those things and is plant or fungus based…I think it’s cheaper to produce and generally has a longer shelf life. I’ve never seen D2 in Australia, only D3.

Do vitamins work…they probably do, apparently certain vitamins help ease things. In any case you could ask the same about anti psychotics…do they work,… not for me!!

I stopped my experiment, but I got some advise that I should take my meds some time before taking vitamins, As I heard this is healthier. So no meds and vitamins together, but separately.

i find that to be true just why that is to me is unclear
