It is actually really common for webcams and microphones to be hacked. There was a good article on Vice about it. It’s mostly for advertisers.

Yes, I have my laptop camera covered. Frankly, I’d love if they could start making laptops without cameras again. It’s not like I’ve ever even used it.
Also, pro-tip: Don’t buy computers or computer parts from China. Actually, don’t buy any sort of electronic device from China.
