Do opiates cause psychosis?

Do opiates cause psychosis to happen in predisposed people? I have read a lot about it and I came to a conclusion they don’t but the withdrawal can. I know weed and stimulates can but what about opiates?

It seems that opiates must trigger the release of dopamine, so they’d probably worsen the symptoms of someone who was actively psychotic.

Isn’t psychosis caused by more than just dopamine though? Can it cause psychosis when you are fine and have no symptoms I wonder?

I knew a guy who was fine mentally and was given morphine for a ruptured spleen. He thought the nurses were fattening him up to eat him for Christmas.

Hahah yeah that does sound way to psychotic for my liking! I was planning on trying some opiates when I get off my medication just trying to find out if they cause psychosis or not. I thought they might of been similar to alcohol.

They are addictive…

I’m not worried that they are addictive I would only use occasionally once every few week!

Why would you use Opiates?
They are flat out bad for you.

Opiates are highly addictive and they can worsen Psychosis.
@jimmytheghost - I would steer far away from using Opiates, but that’s me.

My sister thought she could do the same.
Now, she is highly addicted and living on the streets, voluntarily. Her life revolves around getting high, and nothing else.
I have also had two sibling go through rehab for it.

I would steer clear. It’s nothing like alcohol.

No, I’ve been addicted to codeine and it did nothing to effect my schizophrenia. It just destroyed my liver.

I’ve been addicted to morphine pills. It’s a hell to stop taking them. You think you will die. You get flue like symptoms.

I took them to cope with my voices and paranoia. Bad choise. They won’t go away on morphine. I almost killed myself because of the voices and paranoia. When high on morphine and psychotic your thoughts are not so logic.

I was a heroin/opiate addict for years and had my first psychotic break after being clean from them for about 5 years. At the time of my break I was still drinking and was prescribed adderral though.

We’re you on medication at the time of using opiates treating your schizophrenia?

Yes I was. I’m on 12mg Invega.

Slight risk. Szadmin posted an article that says they increase the risk by like 1.6x. But don’t do opiates. Many of my friends went down that road and no one sane in the history of mankind has credited opiates for their SUCCESS. I know it sounds tempting at times but it’s just not worth it.

I wonder how much alcohol increases the risk compared to opiates? I guess opiates would be a higher risk

oh yes definitely

No alcohol is higher according to the study.
