Following on from my last post involving the use of amphetamines to treat depression, I’m now wondering how it’s possible that using amphetamines has not brought on psychosis with me? Some of my psychotic symptoms never go away and I have learned to live with them. I’m trying to think if they get worse when I use but can’t come to a conclusion.
Does anyone have any idea how I can use and not go full on psychotic? Smoking cannabis brings on my symptoms big time so obviously I don’t go near it. But I’m really confused as to why amphetamines are different!
Any advice or information much appreciated. But please don’t tell me to stop using - I will do that in my own time.
I think for the longest time they thought amohetamines was a BIG BIG trigger for sz. But recent studies @SzAdmin made a thread say the risk is not that great but still a risk. All drugs are bad though. A lot of szs use opiates because low risk of psychosis but they’re scarrrry. My cousins a heroin addict and he’s back in rehab now. The same study said hallucinogens have a low risk of sz, and hallucinogens played a major part in why my psychosis was as severe as it was! So not sure to trust this study completely!
All illegal drugs I should say. If you’re struggling with addiction, research naltrexone. It’s designed for opioid dependence and alcoholism but I believe it helps me stay away from other illegal substances as well.
it depends on the type of amphetamine. For example, crystal meth is like…the unholy trinity of upper shyt (dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin all at once) and is really bad. It produces risky behaviors, impulsive thoughts, and jail. Do not take the shyt. It will make you take more because it is addictive as ■■■■.
Prescription uppers in the amphetamine class such as adderal and vyvanse, ritalin and concerta, all work on dopamine and/or norepinephrine…by jacking it up. They are bad for growth (they can cause undernourishment and tissue damage, also stunt height like make you short) but they are not exactly super dangerous like the meth meth, the crystal shyt.
basically, they are watered down meth! If the above doesnt make sense, that sentence is all you need to remember to know what is going to ruin your day. Honestly, dude, you are better off drinking four tall black coffees a day than that crap.
I would know.
Take meds not as prescribed…the reason you are not becoming insane is because the stimulants are probably working against a powerful downer to just cancel it out to an extent, but not 100%.
I used to use ephedra which is a kind of amphetamine to suppress my appetite and it definitely aggravated my Psychosis but it helped me to get through my depression feelings. It didn’t exactly make me feel happy but it was better than nothing.
My addiction to prescription stimulants triggered a very serious manic episode in March-April which caused two hospitalizations and a lot of ■■■■■■ up ■■■■. My dx was changed from schizophrenia to schizoaffective d/o bipolar type because of this and the deep depression I fell into after I crashed which has still not remitted, causing me to be getting electroconvulsive therapy in a matter of days.
Honestly, I think the antidepressants and school stress had a lot more to do with it than my addiction considering the episode only started two weeks after I stopped taking amphetamines, but it was definitely part of the picture. And I don’t ascribe my drug use as the cause of the situation I’m in, but again it was a huge factor.
I took 100mg modafinil for 2 years with my regular antipsychotic without worsening of psychosis. But after my psychotic relapse, I can’t even tolerate 50mg modafinil - it just worsens my paranoia. Now I’m off all stimulants - even SSRIs are worsening my psychosis, so I stopped them as well.
Some sz can take stimulants without any problems and some sz can’t. Generally most pdoc wont recommend taking stimulants if you have psychosis/sz. You can ask your pdoc about the same.
Hopefully someone might give you the answer you need but my comment is that certain people I have partied with have in specific cases seem to be immune to certain drugs. The first few times I smoked pot as a teenager, it had no effect on me. After smoking it three or four times I finally got high from it.
Other people have told me they have experienced this too. I took acid for the first time when I was 16. Once I took it with a friend who had never take it before. I got my usual high but he did not feel a thing. When I was addicted to crack it had no effect on my illness. I once smoked crack with a guy I had just met. It was his first time and he felt nothing. I don’t know how common this is or if these were isolated cases o This is just my experience.
I forgot to say that I shot heroin a few times and it had no effect on my symptoms.
No I did not? Is that where they expose alcoholics to naltrexone, then have them drink on it, to make them associate alcohol with getting slightly sick so they don’t want to touch the poison anymore. That’s just my guess though.
Just took my first dose naltetroxen today. Felt a little dizzy and that this was a huge plot against me but I tried to reason my way through it and took extra Azp now I feel better but it was very hard to get off the couch and get some stuff done.
But I had a weird work schedule today.
What was it like when you started taking it?
What time do you take it?
I remember I first took it at night now I take it in morning. My therapist says it can cause nausea at first, but it didn’t for me. But it’ll go away she said. Good luck.
when my shrink gave me ritalin for depression, it was in a very low dose. the dexedrine i got later for focus upped the symptoms some, but not greatly. it’s about balance, right?
I was tired one night at work…one of my friends said try this…at the end of the night I had painted my face with my own blood and got a lot of work done…adderal makes me focus too hard…I cut my hand on accident and didn’t want to waste the blood so I spent 30 mins painting my face with it…but the rest of the time I worked really hard…so idk I don’t think uppers are good for us…
I take 70mg vyvanse and my psychiatrist tells me he would rather that I get off of it j but it doesn’t affect me negatively actually when I’m on it the voices don’t bother at all and I get along with people much better
