Do IOP’s help?

My nephew has been struggling as of late.
Lots of depressive and anxiety symptoms.
His psychiatrist suggested that he attends these intensive outpatient programs as an alternative to going inpatient.
There he will get lots of counseling and they will adjust his meds apparently.

Has anyone gone through IOP programs?
Do they help?

I’m worried about him.

Ive done inpatient (in the hospital), residential (on a campus, more freedom than inpatient), PHP, and IOP. PHP is partial hospitalization, its similar to IOP but instead of being 3 hours 3-5 days a week, its 6 hours 5 days a week. You still stay at home. More structure, more support, and more help. After a month or two of PHP you step down to IOP. For me, i benefited the most from doing residential, then PHP, then IOP. But if he doesnt need residential treatment going from PHP to IOP is really helpful.

I have done it several times. Most of it was just watching movies.

Ok thanks @TomCat

The ones I’ve gone to had seeing the psychiatrist, individual therapy, group therapy, art therapy, and more.
