Discrmination at the ER

I feel discriminated when I was at the ER because I broke my foot and they asked me if I take any meds. I answered yes and said Abilify and immidetly their tone changed… they asked me 3 times what job I had as if I would tell them something else.

I was at the ER once for something physical and the doctor kind of flinched when I told him I was on abilify.

I’ve definitely felt discriminated against in multiple doctor visits…

Only one doc hasn’t made me feel as if my sza isn’t the basis for all illness. I laughed when he told me “you are allowed to be crazy and sick”.

I had told him I was crazy, so he just used my own words. He was really cool.

I freak out when I have to tell someone about my condition or my meds. Having someone react like that in the ER is my nightmare.

Here our heath records are on computer now, so they know already

I get assumed to be a drug addict a lot when they find out I’m sz. They almost always ask if I’m on recreational drugs after they find out.

My psychiatrist asked that because they increase the chance of developping sz. He told me to stop smoking weed.

I was at the hospital for chest pain and the nurse was going over my chart. She said, “oh, schizophrenia.” She turns to my wife and, “how often is he violent.”

“He is not and never has been violent. Are you always an ignorant bigot?”

The nurse stomped out and my wife followed her. Never saw her again for that stay. Pretty sure the Missus sorted it. She does that.

When I had to get my latest surgery, the nurse was going through my chart and said, youre schizoaffective? She got really scared and almost walked out on me without helping me get ready for surgery. I think people think that if you have sz or sza you’re not worthy of receiving care. It happens to me a lot. I’ve actually been told before to please go to a different hospital for treatment. Literally.

When I first started Abilify, I had a massive panic attack.

I called the ambulance and when they arrived, the paramedic asked if I was on any medications.

I told him I had just started Abilify, and he asked what for.

Out of fear of stigma, I told him I was taking it for bipolar.

I was afraid that if I mentioned anything SZ-related they either wouldn’t take me seriously, or send me straight to the ward.

When the doctor treating me in the ER found out that my diagnosis was schizoaffective she immediately thought I was a drug addict.
She kept telling me to remain “clean”

She had no clue.

It’s not just the ER. I signed up for the counseling through my work. As soon as SZ was on the menu they started assuming I was having all kinds of workplace issues I was not. The only two issues I’m having at work right now are getting hacked on for working too many hours in the new job role (I’m clearing out a backlog) and some butthurt from people on my team that I blew past for the promotion. Some have 20 years in and I have 4. Didn’t stop me from rolling them.

I love how people automatically decide what we’re like based on one word, eh?

Another ER doctor threatened to have me removed from the hospital after finding out of my schizoaffective diagnosis.
This was five years ago.
I was horrified.

I had a doctor call me an ambulance because she thought I was having seizures and wanted me evaluated. The ER looked at my chart and sent me to the psych ward, even confistated my shoelaces. I explained the mistake but nobody believed me. I had to wait for Mr. Star to show up and repeat the exact same thing to the doc before I was able to leave.

What’s up with these ER doctors?
You’d think that they would know better.

Another time, Mr. Star and I were on a hike when he got bit by a very strange bug. I injured my arm on the same hike. His whole ear swelled up badly and I took him to the urgent care. The doc asked if I wanted my arm looked at also. I said sure. He went first and I explained about the weird bug and she took me very seriously.

After she treated him, she pulled up my chart to treat me. As soon as she saw schizophrenia, her whole demeanor changed. She started calling Mr. Star’s bite a bee sting, despite me saying very clearly it was a green bug that I had never seen before. She barely looked at my arm and sent us home. It was so infuriating and Mr. Star almost yelled at her.

We later looked up the bug and found out it is an invasive species that recently came to our region.
