Yesterday something painful happened in my life

So I went to this job interview in an MNC. There I wanted be honest about my health condition with them because I just wanted to open up about myself without any qualms about it.

So I filled the form and mentioned that I was schizophrenic.

I cleared the 4 rounds and in the HR round I got rejected because they thought Schizophrenics are not fit the job as they may become unstable any time. I told them I am in medication and been stable for 5 years without an episode and even showed them my doctor’s medical certificate that I am fit to work but they ignored it all.

My sadness is not about the fact that I got rejected but the fact that medical sciences diagnosis of our mental state is very disrespectful to say the least. We are treated with an assumption that we are psychotic people who can turn like psychopaths anytime.

The diagnosis we get is “Psychotic Patient” that in itself is an insult. It’s like homophobic slurs.

So I wish to see a world where we are given the diagnosis as “Altered state of mind”… because it really is an altered state.

Some respect is all I ask for from the society.

You will find a job that embraces you as you are if you keep looking but discrimination is Out there.

So sorry to hear that

I was also very open about my mental health with IBM, but unlike you, I was reassured that support would be available for me in my new role

The company also has mental health champions who are trained in dealing with these sorts of issues

You are a lucky person… not everybody gets such respect in our society.

@EDM_Stan, what country are you in? This is illegal in the US because it’s discrimination of a disabled person

I am from India.

Here the nurses in a psyche ward itself don’t respect the mentally ill people…

One nurse played games with me in psyche ward.

She used to call my name and when I used to go there she used to say I didn’t call you…

They’re mean here too actually. I’m sorry you get treated poorly. I do too. I now have my husband come with me to appointments and advocate for me. But, I finally lucked out a bit. I have a nice primary dr and a nice pdoc. I just kept changing drs until I found them.

Sorry to hear @EDM_Stan

I was seeking a job through an agent once. I wrote an application for a job and a curriculum. I wrote that I had been absent from work in a period of my life due to schizotypy

The agent read the application and said “Hmmn it’s good, but you cannot say anything about that schizo - something.”

I changed my application and wrote depression instead of schizotypy and I got the job, but felt like a liar.

Hope you get a good job that matches your wishes and your SZ,

I’m sorry that happened to you to be honest when I’m done with college and I need to get a job/internship I will just straight up lie and not tell them I have SZ there’s just so much stigma around it. Plenty of people with SZ are high functioning and intelligent capable of working for sure.

I just want to say even though they turned you away and it hurts I admire you being honest with them. I hope you continue being honest and you will find a good fit soon.

In the UK I feel like if they actually said that to you you could take em to court about it as it counts as discrimination against the disabled.
