Disabled people and work

They should have schemes that encourage businesses to take on disabled people. I would be happy to work part time for £2 an hour.

They have those here. I’ve had three or four jobs where they hire the disabled. I’ve used a few employment agencies who deal exclusively with disabled people.

That’s a process I’m going through now. Aparently I get paid by the state for the first 80 hours then the employer can decide whether or not they want to hire me. Risk free for the business.

If you don’t mind me asking, how does one go about doing that? I don’t know much about finding work as a disabled person.

Well here in kansas we have vocational rehabilitation. Basically the state hires someone to help you find work. Look for that program in your state. They are even helping me build my résumé and with interviewing skills and stuff of that nature. Call it job coaching.

Cool, thanks man…I’m gonna look into that.

They’ve been great so far. They say I have a psychosocial limitation. But all that is getting better.

Yeah, drewleo34, we have a Department of Rehabilitation here in California too. AND Vocational Programs. And they also do what Bryan says. In fact, they gave me a $100.00 to buy brand new “interview” clothes. Fancy new shoes, some nice slacks, a good button down shirt. AND they also cut me a few checks to cover the cost of gas for driving my car to appointments with them. If you hook up with the Dept. of Rehabilitation and they can’t get you a job they still might be able to give you leads to other programs or agencies.

If people are well enough to work then pay them at least the minimum wage. If they are not suitable to earn that minimum wage then don’t pressurise them . Cheap labour is merely a step up from slave labour.

Wow, that’s pretty cool. I looked it up and we have it here in Florida too. I need to start using resources like this because I don’t have the help I used to. Thanks, guys.

No problem. The employment agency I went to got me a job. They counseled me, held mock interviews, gave me many job leads to employers who were hiring. Even sat in on a job interview with me. And I got the job. They helped me plan my job search and organize my job search. I talked one on one with job counselors. All that, and free cups of coffee!!!

Oh, yeah, I don’t want to beat a dead horse but they also made a resume for me.

Sounds like this is probably how I should go about my next attempt at working. This was a good thread.

It’s not grand scale… but little by little people are being valued for their other abilities.
