Should I just get on disability while I’m going to school? I feel like I should work but idk if I could do both. My plan is to go to welding school and start welding. I’m hoping to be good on meds by then.
You’re not on meds right now?
The reason I ask is because school can be very stressful if you don’t have your symptoms under control. But it’s also very fun to learn new things.
I don’t mean to crush your dreams or anything like that, I just hope you’re able to get everything straightened out mentally-wise, well at least get it to be manageable, then I would consider school.
Wish you the best!
Yes can u work lost
I guess i cant cuz of negatives…so poor me…
I’m on meds but still have some paranoia.
Between disability and working part time I can get by. I started my dishwashing job and I can do this the rest of my life for all I care haha. Especially if I moved to a cheaper place or got a roommate or something or both.
I have a problem with negative symptoms too.
I’ll move up there n we can get this rap thing going hahah
I understand. I’m on 2 AP’s and a mood stabilizer, & I still have some symptoms.
My spirituality, creativity, and sense of humor is what really gets me through things.
Welding is awesome stuff though! If you can join a local union, they’ll send you to school, and you’ll pretty much have work cut out for you.
I may do that. There’s a union an hr from me. I try to meditate and pray sometimes. I use to smoke n meditate a lot. So u believe in God?
I think they will be changing my meds for no reason. I’m fairly stable.
Yes, I have strong faith.
Definitely look into the union. If you’re a hard worker, and have a good eye for detail, and respect the other folks in the trade that have been doing it for a while, you’ll do good.
Thanks for the advice. It had totally slipped my mind. I think I’ll call em tomorrow.
are you in the us? when we first apply for diability it is said to be very restictive on our activities. i dont know if is true or not, but some say that includes our ability to go to classes. later after it is obtained, the restrictions are loosened to allow those on disabiliy to try to work.
it is said certain conditions must be very severe and limiting. i have tried 3 times and turned down.
Man, I can’t even handle formal schooling on meds (I have to do everything by self-study as I can’t take classroom crowding). If I tried to do it without meds, I’m sure the mushroom cloud would be visible half a continent away.
STRONGLY suggest meds first and then school. Disability while going to school is not a bad idea if it is workable where you live. Definitely worth following up on that notion.
Wishing you luck.
I have until January before classes start. Hopefully I can be better by then.
Yeah im in the US. I got approved but it doesn’t start until January.
That is great news then! There may even be special grants, scholarships, and loans for you, check with a financial counsllor at the school.
Many colleges have a disability office too. You dont have to tell them your diagnosis if you dont want to. Just stating cognative difficulties might be enough. You can get acommadations you need from that office such as extra time for test. Or notes.
I don’t this for sure at all, but I’m not sure if they will grant disability to someone who is already in school. They understand people who are so physically or mentally ill that they can’t function, and that the disabled person who can’t function needs the money to cover basic living expenses. And the disability office even understands that some of the money (if granted) can be spent on some kind of entertainment occasionally.
And they understand that people who can’t function well or at all when they first apply may get a job or go to school down the road. But the fact that you can sit in a classroom full of people day after day and function in that capacity and do all it entails, it just might make them think twice before granting you money.
I don’t know the rules on that but you probably already checked on whether you can get granted disability initially while currently attending school.
