Did your psychosis get worse when untreated

I mean did you need a higher dose after stopping meds for a long time? I was stable on 10mg Abilify then went off meds for 2yrs. My psychosis got worse, also the anger issues got worse, I never experienced anger issues before stopping my meds even when I was off meds psychotic before diagnosis. Now on 10mg Abilify I get anger issues. Now I need 6mg risperidone equivalent to 46mg Abilify to be free of all symptoms. I wish I never stopped my meds for so long. I feel like I permanently damaged my brain

I struggle with missing a dose lately. I don’t feel better until I take my meds. It’s just. not wise to stop meds without your pdoc. I don’t care who you are you will feel consequences I did. And do and imtured. Much love hugs rox

i have read that there is increasing doubt that untreated psychosis damages the brain… honestly, why should it harm, it is a natural process of the brain in comparison to ap which manipulate brain chemistry. there are millions of people who get along without( africa, rural india etc.)and their healing rate is significantly higher, maybe because of natural coping strategies… For me psychosis is a sign of for inner change and for a human development…

You probably havent made any sort of strategy on what you would do if you get psychosis again so this is just not a good idea man. You absolutely need to get a new psychiatrist. They can give you a fresh perspective.

Oh i just read it looks like you have one again (pdoc) recently?

I think I mentioned on another thread that I reduced my Abilify by 5 mg during the summer that just passed. The noise sensitivity came back by the third week, and the voices became more prominent. This put me at risk of becoming very irate because the sound just burns my brain…I don’t know how else to describe it. My brain felt like an open sore. Everything was soooo loud. I lasted only a month on the lower dose, before going back to my normal dose.

Dementia is natural and damages the brain. The damage can be seen in MRIs, the brain shrinks. Natural doesn’t always mean good

i dont know. i just read that ap can cause neudegenration and alzheimer. my brain didnt shrink i did already did a mrt

The damage that psychosis does doesnt always shows up on mri as its chemical but the dementia damage always shows up

Idk. I know one thing for sure - I need meds, and at certain moments I need lower dose; at certain times higher

Never stop an AP cold turkey! It’s very dangerous!

However, slowly[*] tapering off could work in some cases. Doing some sort of therapy to compensate for the decrease in medication will be of help.

The brain recovers even after severe psychotic breaks. But it needs time (years).

[*] If for instance you take 20mg abilify now, try decreasing by 5mg every 3 months, and start doing some cbt in the meantime.

Aziz I’ve learnt from many people that after stopping meds for some years that they were put on higher amounts of antipsychotics. But personally I believe that your brain will recover after maybe a decade so that you can be put back on the original dose.
