Many people have told me treatment matters more then a diagnosis, but with my personal experience I received the best treatments once I was properly diagnose.
I 100% agree with this. If I were being treated for schizophrenia, they likely wouldn’t give me a mood stabilizer. But since my diagnosis is schizoaffective bipolar type, I have two antipsychotics, a mood stabilizer, and an antidepressant. Diagnosis does matter, imo. It influences what meds are prescribed.
I felt much better myself once I was given a mood stabilizer after being diagnose with Bipolar 1 with psychotic features.
In my case, I’m not sure if it matters because the meds keep the psychosis away.
But in another sense I do agree, cos I have a whole lot of other symptoms the doctors can’t do anything about and I’d like to know what I have.
My diagnosis went back and forth between bipolar and schizoaffective
My current psychiatrist kept a bipolar diagnosis for the longest time until I protested and explained my symptoms to her in more detail
She finally gave me the correct diagnosis of schizoaffective
IMO Diagnosis does matter
