Definition of normal / abnormal

Bought myself an interesting textbook on abnormal psychology. First chapter defines normal/abnormal

So what is abnormal?

Any behaviour that:
Goes against cultural norms
Causes suffering to person
Is interfering with functioning
Indicates mental illness
Is unusual

So what is normal is opposite of that - culture norm
Not unusual
Not causing suffering
Not diagnosed mental illness
Not interfering with functioning

Just thought I’d share as someone raised the issue on here

As cultural norms can differ from country to country that would suggest ‘normality’ is a moving target.

I think in terms of the need for help that is true. However you can be ‘abnormal’ without an impact on functioning.
