I am from a responsible middle-class family. I was never abused. The myth that I am learning from seeing others on this website is that it’s not all about medication. I always thought it was all about medication and That was the only hope for schizophrenia. But I’m learning that A person with schizophrenia can actually improve by working at improving their life.
Yea, I’m sure people in my family probably think my being ill has to do with being raised by a single parent and my dad never really being around, or possibly growing up without a whole lot of extra stuff.
Or maybe using cannabis.
Or partying.
Or being highly irresponsible and unfocused or troubled.
Or perhaps just a huge flaw in character altogether… I really don’t know what they think of me being sick.
But it is a little heavy to be afflicted with this illness while my cousins all have their shiit together and are progressing with their lives.
Very relatable post
#6: Myth: Schizophrenics are dangerous, violent people.
Not true obviously.
Myth #7 : People with schizophrenia have split personalities.
Seems like this is a somewhat common belief. probably not as much as it used to be.
I watched an episode of Perry Mason with my dad a few months ago where the person on the stand supposedly had schizophrenia and they portrayed them as having 2 distinct personalities.
I think myths come mostly from the media/news on tv mostly, so many stories of how our illnesses are portrayed and betrayed
leading some to think we are all the same and capable of monstrosities
Myth #8 : psychotic = psychopathic
