Curing erectile dysfunction by switching medication

I was wondering if anyone here had sexual side effects from medication and was able to cure them by switching meds. I currently am experiencing erectile dysfunction and am trying to switch meds to cure it. I have switched from invega to seroquel and then to abilify without remarkable results  my psychiatrist is thinking about trying zyprexa next

I’m facing some issues on Risperidone.
Had very little problems on Abilify.
Doesn’t mess with prolactin.

My doctor prescribed me buspirone to combat my sexual dysfunction. It didn’t work for me, but it might be worth looking into. I ended up just waiting until I was stable, then getting my dose lowered. That helped a lot.

@Wave Then I wonder why I still get problems with abilify. It might be because I still take a little bit of seroquel to sleep at night. Without it though I get insomnia with the abilify. I read somewhere that changes in dopamine can also cause ED, maybe that’s what’s happening to me. It is unfortunate what our medications can do to us :frowning:

@Ninjastar I’ll be sure to talk to my psychiatrist about it. After the med switches and continued sexual side effects I’m beginning to just think it’ll be permenant :frowning: I’ll keep trying though. The first couple years on meds I was fine so there is hope maybe

Some sexual side effects are permanent or semi-permanent.

Antidepressants have completely changed my sexual functioning, its something I think might not get better ever, but there is also the possibility that a few months out it will normalize.

As for atypical antipsychotics, they tamper with brain chemistry and produce significant changes in many people. The delicate mental and physiological balance which is required to achieve and maintain erection may be disturbed. This is an effect which may get better over time. It may just be a matter of your unique brain chemistry. On atypicals, some people are motivated, some people are sleepy, some are always hungry, yet others suffer from symptoms similar to you.

So basically, if you want to maintain your sz treatment, its possible you might need to accept the effects or alter your regen in some way. Decrease the antipsychotic gradually with the help of your doctor, or add on wellbutrin, which can improve libido.

I seriously hope our sexual side effects are only temporary. It is a very serious side effect that does damage to at least my own will to live

I am on risperidone and I have erectile dysfunction and dry orgasms…

Risperdal was the worst. In general, the higher the dose, the worse ED is. Common sense right? I had less problems on Abilify, Latuda, and Vraylar. But if you notice, those meds are newer and cost a lot of money. Most people cannot afford them. It’s sad. I guess I am lucky.

I don’t think it’s that bad in my case, I have some problems but I’m fine, I can say

I don’t cum. And erection is weak.

Latuda/Vraylar is the best for ED. I mean no medicine is better. My old doc told me some couples decide to stop meds when they do their business for a day. I guess it works/helps…
