CT scan for sz. Is it worth it?

I’ve been discussing this with my doc and nurse and they seem OK with the idea. What have been your experiences with CT scans?

Yes. It rules out other causes that could be more serious

I have had several and 2 MRIs of the head too.

Did it reveal a “sz brain”, or did it just rule out other diagnoses?

Just rule out other dg i think.
“everything in physiological boundaries” was my finding from CT scan.

You can have an MRI for a sz brain but it’s a special scan. I have never had any of those. Just regular ones. There is info about it on the sz.com main page.

They just rule out tumors and things like that

I’ve had a ct scan and 2 MRI scans. The knowledge I’ve gained was worth it.

Thanks guys, I think I’ll be requesting the CT scan after all.

An MRI can tell you a lot more than a CT scan can. If you have the option of an MRI, or even better, a PET scan, those will yield much more valuable information, if there is any. Some folks (like myself have enlarged ventricles in the brain that the MRI found), which is a red flag for sz. Not definitive, but a warning sign. You won’t be harmed by getting a CT, but there’s nothing it can tell you that an MRI can’t. On the flip side, an MRI can tell you things that a CT can’t.

I always wanted one to confirm the diagnosis if possible. Doesn’t seem to be common in England to do this.

I guess one too many bouts of psychosis is enough for doctors to give you this illness as a label.

I’ve had one. Don’t have enlarged ventricles but do have slightly assymetrical ones. Not sure that means anything and I’ve also had mri’s.

It’s unusual to see differences. It really is how schizophrenia is. Ie it’s at a level where the major stuff looks normal. If you could scan the neurotransmitters that would be interesting.

Honestly. I wouldn’t pay to get one done!

Ive had a ct scan once to rule out pituitary gland tumors (the reason for the test was my prolactin was high, sz was alresdy diagnosed at this point). My psychiatry said my brain was normal but being a ct scan i dont think it shows much of whats going on
