Criteria for music evaluation šŸŽ¶

I’ve never been a fan of music critics, but I brought a couple of criteria for if it helps. It’s an ā€œeditedā€ copy paste, for it to be shorter I took out a lot in the definitions.

-Quality of materials. How well-constructed are the melodies and harmonies? How interesting and rhetorically meaningful are the rhythms? Is the instrumentation suited to the material and is it balanced?

-Economy of means, Is the composer/songwriter/improviser able to build a vibrant composition from a few small germ ideas, or do they simply rely on new idea after new idea to propel the music forward in a rambling fashion?

-Simplicity vs. complexity. Is it because the creator found just the right way to say something and didn’t feel the need to junk up the sonic canvas? If the music is complex, is that complexity intriguing and immersive with an undergirding logic to it, or is it out of control, undisciplined, and overwhelming?

-Clarity of expression. Is the music well-designed in terms of communicative purpose and power? Is it confusing or widely varied intentionally, or is it confusing because the creator did not have a message or did not figure out how to express the one she had?

-Novelty. Does the composer authentically seek out new ideas and procedures in either a sort of heroic struggle for expression or an exploratory desire, or does he seem to be relying on established conventions?

-Historical context and intelligibility. Does the composer respect and find a place within the applicable established conventions for this type of work, adding her own voice and thus enriching that tradition, or does she seem to be relying on novelty for its own sake, perhaps out of lack of an authentic communicative voice?

Feel like it could be useful for me man. I fire straight from the hip most of the time. Maybe I need to add more dimensions to my music :musical_note::notes::musical_note:

I can’t wait to play with that bass line… Felt like it had some life to it. My music lacks that energy. Maybe I should stop using vst and play my stuff out

Yeah! I especially like that it states that simple music can be amazing!

I feel like it’s easier to make ā€œmusic that has some life to itā€ with real instrument. DAWs are incredible hard to use imo… it just doesn’t sound right what I do

Yea… I just don’t want to put in the work to get good enough lol

Btw how long have u been playing?

All my life tbh, got serious about 5 or 6 years ago. If you shed about 1 month the sax you’re good to go. From there, it’s about perfecting the craft…

Yea I’m gonna get the sax as sound as I can afford it. I want a tenor but I thought I read somewhere that it’s not the easiest to start on. I want to practice boney James :sunglasses:

Tenor and alto are good for starting out don’t be afraid of the one you like.

I tell you, one month in the shed and you can start looking for bands on craiglist/facebook

Maybe check for a second hand sax better

Do you play sax too?

No, but I have many friends that do it. Especially people from music school

Man. Sax opens up the woodwinds, that means flute (embouchure is different tho)… a lot of sax players double on flute

You know how amazing that instrument is… lol

I love the flute šŸŖˆā€¦ I also like the clarinet. Have you ever listened to Wayne shorter? He played with this chick esperanza spalding! He was on the clarinet and it was kinda interesting.

It was jazz
