Could I have Schizophrenia?

Hi Schizo forums! I would like to your guys’ insight on what may be causing what’s been going on with me lately. So I used to be a heavy marijuana smoker, and as a junior in high school I smoked almost every night. I smoked so often, but then one day when I smoked I got extremely depressed, and I felt like I wasn’t myself and I was wasting myself away by smoking. I had very bad anxiety during this, constantly feeling like something bad will happen. When I smoked marijuana often, the following day when I wouldn’t smoke (but just go about my day with school and work), I would have very bad OCD. I had some really weird rituals I had to do and when I did them I knew it was ridiculous, but during that time it felt so right and brought me comfort. That was all towards the end of my senior year. I stopped for a while. Then last year (December) for an entire week I slept for 3 hours a night, for no reason in particular I was just hanging out with friends and playing video games; I was drained physically and felt like I had no energy. I hung out with some friends and we smoked at around 3 am and I heard an old mans voice yelling in my ear. It lasted for 2 seconds but I was terrified. Its weird, because a couple of days later there were 2 instances where it felt like I had something moving around in the ear I heard the voice. It was very weird. The following are things that have happened since then: while I was going to sleep, I heard (not externally from my ears but in my head) the words “Yes…yes.” Also another night I heard, “No” and, “Not yet.” Recently, in the past month (towards the end of the day at night) I’ve been hearing that old mans voice again. The most accurate way I can describe it is that it’s like an old man is having a conversation with someone else through closed doors, and I’m eavesdropping. I can’t make out any words, buts it’s just murmuring something. I was watching something on TV, and the guy in TV made a joke and I thought it was funny and I heard the old man laugh for a few seconds. That was a couple of weeks ago. Just last week, I went to bed and I woke up, and as I tried to go back to sleep I heard the piano playing. And I was the only one awake and the sound was right in my ear. It was absolutely beautiful. It was so good I questioned if I was really the only one awake (I checked and I was). So that’s really it. If you’ve read until this point thank you. I don’t really have thoughts that cameras are recording me or delusions (that I know of haha), In addition, I have pretty bad anxiety and less intense OCD. Let me know what you think please! Should I be worried? Is there anything that can explain what’s going on? Thank you.

I think at a certain period of time, everyone goes through the stage of schizophrenia. It’s upto you how long you want to stay with it?

Usually it’s obvious. If you are 30 or older, forget it as symptoms show up sooner - though there are early (or late) onset cases. The symptoms are very evident as with hallucinations or delusions. Often there is some family history of the illness.

If you’re worried and you believe your mind is “playing tricks” on you or others are noticing behaviors they find odd, then you might want to see professoinal, probably a psychiatrist to explore your behaviors and see if there is a problem.

It’s up to a pdoc to determine if you have drug induced psychosis or if you’re developing schizophrenia.

By the way, I didn’t have a psychotic episode until I was 36. (Although looking back there were instances in my youth that suggested SZ)

Right. The general rule does not apply to all cases the same.

So anything up until I’m 30 I shouldn’t worry about?

No, schizophrenia usually develops before 30. I’m just an exception to the rule.

It can happen. It’s best to have one’s examined by an expert:

Everyone now has schizophrenia. Don’t you know it’s the new hype!

We are not doctors and we cannot diagnose you. I suggest you report your symptoms to a doctor. Right now, they’re not that bad, but they have the potential to get much worse if left untreated.

I will say that my hallucinations started out similar to yours. I started hearing things when I was 14.

Sounds like it could be the schiz

When did it start getting bad/you had to seek psychiatric help?

Why do you say that?

It’s rare for most folks to have some insight. Most just hit the mental health system very hard.

It’s all about function. If your suffering in your life then that is an issue and you should seek medical help.

Professional medical advice is something you need to do yourself. I cannot comment fairly on your situation, whether yeah or no…it isn’t appropriate.

like ninjastar said, get with a psychiatrist and see what they think if you really think you are schizophrenic…good luck.

That old man’s voice was really just you from the future speaking to your youthful self. You probably didn’t hear it when he said "Stop smoking and doing all the stuff that makes me unhealthy.

I didn’t say a psychiatrist. I said a doctor. Physical problems, such as brain tumors and seizures, can cause this problem. Those have to be ruled out first.

Yeah, I’d say I don’t know in your case. Talk to a dr. The good thing is that it doesn’t bother you much now, but it could get worse

Update: I’m going to talk to my psychiatrist and see what’s up… wish me luck I’m very scared.
