Cheap meal ideas

So the cost of living is just ridiculous at the moment.

I bought a slow cooker last week and I’ve done about 3 meals in it so far. (Chilli con carne, macaroni cheese and corned beef hash)

I am looking for cheap but relatively healthy meal ideas. Anyone got any suggestions.

pseudochinese chicken.

Just cook the chicken with a lot of vegetables (Leeks and radish are awesome for these and yes, even the ones that you don´t especially like will taste good)

You need two special ingredients (chinese 5 spices- which is usually bought in chinese supermarkets, and thick soya sauce.

To accompany with plain rice. Enjoy!

Minestrone soup made from frozen vegetables is pretty cheap and I add soup mix ( beans and lentils) in mine to make it more nourishing and filling.

Potato and onion soup.

Carrot soup.

Spaghetti bolognese made from lentils instead of meat is cheap.

Mashed potato with frozen vegetables and gravy.

Tomato soup.

I second the chili. You can buy some cheap crackers and mix salad dressing with tuna and have it with the crackers for a little snack.

Ramen is dirt cheap and you can add almost anything to it. Like cook up a chicken flavor and add some sour cream and jalapenos. Or just add a can of tuna.

Cook up a box of mac and cheese, the kind that doesn’t require milk and butter, and add a drained can of tuna and mix it in with the macaroni when adding the cheese spread.

These are all cheap meals I frequently make.

Hmmm, I’m trying to think. I know if you slow cook pinto beans you can add in white rice later to give the rice some bean flavor.

I imagine there’s a lot better recipes out there though.

Definitely invest in some seasoned salt, cumin, and any Middle-Eastern spice.

Beanie weenies. A can of baked beans and a couple of hotdogs cut up. I had been buying the weiners and canned beans at a gourmet store where the quality is better and it tasted really good but was a little too hard to swallow.

I usually just make mixed bean chili and serve over rice.

get some raw red beans soak overnight or cook on high for eight hours, next day crockpot a covered in water bean about three inches. add chopped ham and an onion to the beans too. cayenne pepper at your heat level…garlic powder…I add red wine to the beans but you probably want to not do that. cook up some rice when the beans are edible and voila cajun red beans and rice.

I make black beans and brown rice in the Instant Pot. My stove top or oven skills are mediocre at best.

I am not very adventurous as I follow the directions for the recipe I find online and add in a boullion cube and maybe a bay leaf and season to taste with soy sauce when it is done.

If you have an Instant Pot or similar appliance I would be happy to share the link.

Slow cookers are great for the tougher cuts of meat. Maybe get some chuck steak (not sure what it is called in other parts of the world) for a hearty meal.
